New Delhi: India got the presidency of the G20 last year. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Friday made it clear that it is the duty of the nation to emerge as the voice of the global south, he was referring to developing countries in Asia, Africa, and South America.

S Jaishankar further added that multiple challenges are hovering in front of the developing nations, and they are looking towards New Delhi with high hopes.

Currently, developing nations are facing several issues, such as rising prices for oil, food, and fertilisers. Apart from this increasing debt and poor economic conditions, there are other challenges that are a worry for developing countries.

Therefore, it would be our duty to become the voice of such countries, known as the global South in diplomatic terms, ” S Jaishankar was quoted as saying by the news agency.

The Ministry of External Affairs also announced that India is set to host a virtual summit on January 12 and 13 to bring countries of the global south onto one platform where common issues will be shared.

S Jaishankar was addressing a gathering at Pramukh Swami Maharaj Nagar, created on 600 acres of land on Ahmedabad’s outskirts as part of Pramukh Swami Maharaj centenary celebrations of the BAPS Swaminarayan sect.

India got the verdict to host the G-20 presidency on December 1 last year. India’s G20 presidency has come at a time when numerous issues are being faced by the world, like the escalating climate crisis, the food and energy crises, the longevity of the Ukraine-Russia war, and geopolitical problems as well.
