Keynote address by Hon Chris Bowen (MP), Australian Minister for Climate Change and Energy.

The Hon Chris Bowen MP was appointed Minister for Climate Change and Energy on 1 June 1 2022. As Minister for Climate Change and Energy, Minister Bowen is focussed on driving climate action, investment in technologies that lower carbon emissions and securing a reliable, affordable and sustainable energy system.

Since his appointment, Australia has enshrined in legislation its new ambitious emissions reduction target of 43% by 2030 and its earlier commitment to net zero by 2050. He is leading the implementation of a substantial and rigorous suite of new policies across the economy to drive the transformation to net zero economy.

Internationally, Minister Bowen is working to address energy security, costs and emissions by strengthening Australia’s partnerships in the region, and with likeminded countries, to develop and secure clean energy supply chains. He is leading Australia’s engagement in the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and Australia’s bid to host the COP31 UN Climate Summit in 2026 in partnership with Pacific island nations.
