Creed III trailer Michael B. Jordan breaks it down

Written by on October 19, 2022

The legend of Rocky Balboa has lived on, but not necessarily through Creed. Rather, Adonis has a reputation of his own now, and that’s clearly shown in the latest installment of the spin-off movie series, ‘Creed III.’

The recently dropped trailer from MGM and United Artists puts the highlight on Michael B Jordan’s “Donnie” Creed, back again on the screen but this time, in the ring with Jonathan Majors.

In the beginning of the trailer, Creed is certainly on top—“I spent the last seven years of my life living out my wildest dreams,” the champion boxer says. Flashes of himself on the cover of Forbes, and winning fights are some of the memories shown on screen, all while his wife Bianca (Tessa Thompson), who also happens to have her own triumphant path in music, and daughter Amara, (Mila Davis-Kent) are right by his side.

“Bianca. Rocky. My dad. I stood on their shoulders,” Creed continues in the first sneak peek of the highly anticipated film.

Not long after, we find out the connection between Major’s character, Dame, and the title boxer we’ve seen—Dame has spent the last 18 years in prison, and Creed knew him as a young kid. He was even there when he was arrested, and it becomes obvious they are connected on a deeper level than just old acquaintances.

Growing up, the duo both boxed—and Major’s protagonist starts to come out at this point—with him claiming that “he was always better” than Donnie. At first, the two seem copacetic, and Creed offers to help Dame. But things escalate.

“Imagine spending half your life in a cell watching somebody else live your life,” we see the newly freed Dame yell as the trailer goes on. He then makes it clear to Creed that he’s “coming for everything.”

And he certainly tries. As you may have anticipated, the trailer leads to a training sequence and then to the ring—it’s the formula that has kept the franchise alive, and it’s the one audiences can’t get enough of.

What is different about this movie is the absence of Sylvester Stallone, but also, the addition of Michael B. Jordan as the director. It’s always been something that has been on the young actor’s mind according to him, but it took ‘Creed’ director Ryan Coogler giving the advice to “jump in the deep end and go for it” that really cemented this latest venture for Jordan.

“I finally got to this place in my career where I wanted to tell a story and not just be in front of the camera, not just execute somebody else’s vision. Having a character that I’ve played twice before — it’s been seven, eight years living with this guy — so to be able to tell the story of where I believe Adonis is at,” the actor explained to reporters at a global press conference. “And also at 35 years old, I had a lot to say, as a young Black man, just my life experiences and how I could actually share a piece of myself with the world through these characters and through the story.”

And with every great hero story comes the protagonistic driving force of the story. We’ve seen some of the greater foes come out from both the ‘Rocky’ and ‘Creed’ series with Drago—and his son for that matter, Clubber Lang and ‘Pretty’ Ricky Conlan closing in on ranks. However with Dame in ‘Creed III,’ it brings back the deeper rivalry that the whole franchise is known for.

Jordan says it himself that Major’s character is a pivotal person and a pillar in Adonis’ life, and that connection gets addressed in this film both in the ring and outside of it.

“For me, as a director, to have that running mate and that scene partner made all the difference in the world,” Jordan continues. “The world is finding out daily how incredible this man is and the work that he does. It’s finally getting the props that it’s due. And Jonathan was incredible, man, he showed up every day ready. Ready to go to war. Ready to work.”

We can all see how that work pays off in 2023.

‘Creed III’ marks the third installment to the series, which has amassed $377 million worldwide. It’s also the ninth installment to the ‘Rocky’ series. The film hits theaters next year, on March 3, 2023.

Michael B. Jordan’s Got Two Jobs in Creed III

My man Michael B. Jordan has two jobs (in the upcoming Rocky franchise installment). The sexist man alive (per People magazine’s astute observation in 2020) directs and stars in Creed III, reprising his role as the unyielding boxer Adonis, the son of Apollo Creed from the original Sylvester Stallone movies. While details about Jordan’s directorial debut have been kept under wraps since the project was green-lit in 2020 — he’s taking the reins from Ryan Coogler and Steven Caple Jr., who directed the first and second films, respectively — first-look photos of the ripped movie star seated in the boxing ring suggest the juiced-out Adonis is more than ready for the fights to come. Another known sexy man, Jonathan Majors, who plays the villain, Damian, also appears in the first batch of pics. The high-intensity trailer, which teases a meaty epic about Adonis’s legacy and Damian’s vengeance, premiered in a surprise, in-person screening on October 17 with Morehouse, Spellman, and Clark Atlanta University students in attendance before officially arriving online the next day. (Watching the pair duke it out in full will surely be an experience.) Below, everything we know about the upcoming battle for the sexiest man alive film.

So who’s in Creed III?

If you’ve been keeping up with the Rocky spinoffs, you know Jordan leads the whole shebang as Adonis Creed, the son of Apollo, Rocky’s antagonist in the original film. Tessa Thompson, who appeared in the first two Creed installments, returns as Adonis’s love interest, Bianca. (In an interview with MTV, she said her co-star’s sexiness may disarm her when he’s the director: “It’s going to be ammo, I think, for me when he is engaging with me as a director,” Thompson admitted, to the collective nod of everyone who thinks Jordan is just too fine. “I’m just going to tell him to dial down the sexiness.”) I hope she isn’t part of the camp who thinks Majors got it going on too; with the actor, who also plays Marvel’s Kang the Conqueror, as the movie’s villain, Damian, the handsomeness on set would probably be too much to bear.

“I think, first of all, Jonathan Majors is incredible,” Jordan said in an October 17 press conference. “Very, very blessed and lucky to have him be a part of this story … The world is finding out daily how incredible this man is in the work that he does, [and he] is finally getting the props that’s due.” Jordan called the remainder of the cast “incredible” — the group includes Phylicia Rashad, Wood Harris, and Florian Munteanu, who reprise their roles from earlier entries in the franchise. Meanwhile, this is the first film in which creator and O.G. star Stallone will not appear.

As for the soundtrack, Jordan confirmed that Dreamville and J. Cole will be executive-producing the project.

What’s the plot?

The only thing we can make of the plot so far is that Jordan and Majors will fight — a sweaty spectacle that’ll be enough to get most people’s butts in seats. In an interview with Men’s Health, Majors hinted at his character’s past being linked to his own trauma. “There are certain reasons you build your body,” he told the magazine. “Dame’s body was built from loss. He had lost something, and that hole is what made him work the way he worked. When you see Dame’s body, you go, Oh, that makes sense. You don’t look like that and be happy with life.”

The trailer picks up where Majors’s comments leave off. We see Damian, who appears to be Adonis’s childhood friend, return to society after getting locked up. The details are murky, but it’s clear he’s seeking revenge after Adonis wronged him during a run-in with the cops that landed Damian in jail. When asked about the film’s themes in the press conference, Jordan said that homecoming, settling debts, and accountability are the big ones in this project, which he called the “most challenging thing that I’ve ever done by far.”

“You have to face your past and find out who you really are,” the director said. “I think it is something that we address in this movie … I wanted to create a story where everybody felt like they could relate to something.” His way of telling a relatable, universal story? Diving into his own experiences: “I had a lot to say as a young man, as a young Black man, [about] my life experiences and how I could actually share a piece of myself with the world through these characters and through this story.”

Beyond the film’s thematic elements, the relationship between Adonis and Bianca begins to evolve. “I feel like there’s a time where adults, people in a relationship, have to make choices,” Jordan began his thought experiment that felt like an indirect comment on his former relationship with Lori Harvey. “How do you compromise? Where’s the middle ground, you know? How do two people who are successful by themselves be successful together? … What does that look like? Who’s carrying the weight within a relationship?” In earlier comments about the lead couple’s evolution, he admitted he could relate to Adonis: “I think it was a reflection of kind of where I was in my life, you know, professionally, personally.” 👀

When will Creed III be released?
The first-look photos came with a confirmed release date: The film hits theaters (in the face) March 3.

‘Creed 3’ Trailer: Jonathan Majors Personifies Frenemy By Stepping In The Ring With Michael B. Jordan

The trailer for Creed 3 is out and it’s clear that Michael B. Jordan’s Adonis has a soft spot in his heart for old friends who went to jail long ago. It’s also clear that said old friends might not be friends at all once we see that Jonathan Majors steps into the ring as Damian Anderson.

At least that’s the gist of what we see in the new trailer released for the March 2023 film spun off from the Rocky Balboa film classics. Jordan’s Adonis ‘Donnie’ Creed (son of Rocky rival, Apollo Creed) tries to help a childhood friend but instead gets lured into a fight. The duo movie posters share a split saying: “You can’t run …. from your past.” And, as Damian says in a crucial part of the trailer: “You think you mad? Try spending half your life in a cell, watching somebody else live your life.”

Jealousy. A tale as old as time, and a tale that will bring Rocky and Creed fans right on back to the box office on March 3, 2023. The first film in the series, Creed, brought in 109-million domestically and 67-million outside the United States for a worldwide take of $173.5-million for the Ryan Coogler-directed fan favorite. Creed II did better than that, bringing in 115.7-million domestically and 98.5-million internationally for a worldwide take of $214.2-million.

It’s been seven years since we last saw Creed at the theaters. In a special conversation that included members of the National Association of Black Journalists, Michael B. Jordan talked a bit about the film, which is also his directoral debut.

“I finally got to this place in my career where I wanted to tell a story and not just be in front of the camera, not just execute somebody else’s vision,” Jordan said. “And having a character that I’ve played twice before, it’s been seven, eight years living with this guy. So to be able to tell a story of where I believe Adonis is at, and also at 35 years old, I had a lot to say as a young man, as a young Black man, just my life experiences and how I could actually share that, share a piece of myself with the world – through these characters and through this story. So I just felt like it was the right time. You know, I was talking to Ryan Coogler back when we were doing CREED I, and he was just like, It’s never the right time. You just gotta jump in the deep end and go for it, you know?”

The Creed 3 trailer is almost too shredded for words

The champ is on the comeback… but maybe we’re rooting for the villain too?

The first Creed movie was the kind of film that made you want to run a lap around the entire goddamn globe. It was a rare franchise revival that told its own story — and an incredibly resonant, jubilant one at that. It followed young Adonis Creed, the son of deceased Rocky Balboa foe Apollo Creed as he went from maladjusted youth to Rocky pupil to heavyweight champ that stood on his own two feet. The second film is better not talked about. But the third? Our first look at the latest sequel looks like a hell of a comeback.

In Creed 3, Michael B. Jordan is stepping back into the ring, and also the director’s chair, for what looks like a more personal story than the last film, which focused on pitting Donnie Creed (Michael B. Jordan) against the son of Rocky Balboa’s (Sylvester Stallone) rival Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren), the Soviet super-boxer who notoriously killed Creed’s father Apollo in the ring.

Creed 3 focuses more squarely on Adonis, with Rocky nowhere to be seen. Jonathan Majors plays Anderson Dame, a childhood friend of Creed’s who shared his rough upbringing but without the golden parachute of boxing royalty there to rescue him. The trailer sets the two of them on a collision course, as Adonis’ attempts to welcome Anderson into his life are met with hostility, and the only place left to sort things out is the ring.

The trailer is both a great sell for the film and also a hell of a promo for the big Creed-Dame fight. Jordan and Majors are shredded beyond belief — and both command a charisma that’s at least as big as their traps. (This makes them….thirst traps. Get it?) It’s also, ironically, a premise that mirrors Jordan’s other big role, only this time Majors is the Killmonger to Jordan’s Black Panther, a ghost from the past ready to take what’s his. I can’t wait to see them fight it out.
