5 Keys from Patriots win over Cardinals on Monday Night Football

Written by on December 13, 2022

Here are the key takeaways from the Patriots win over the Arizona Cardinals on Monday Night Football.

The Patriots and Cardinals went back and forth early on Monday Night Football with the Patriots prevailing as they pulled away in the second half thanks to multiple takeaways that changed the complexion of the game. New England won 27-13, improving their season record to 7-6 with their playoff hopes alive as the seventh AFC playoff seed at the close of Week 14.

Arizona lost quarterback Kyler Murray on their third play of the game but backup Colt McCoy was up to the task early on, moving the ball down the field and helping to give the Cardinals a first-half lead that they would be unable to maintain. New England’s defense eventually took over as the game progressed with stops and takeaways that changed the course of the game.

The Patriots offense battled injuries of their own and while they still fought through some untimely mistakes and inconsistency, they also delivered some of their biggest and most explosive plays of their season while also finally finding some success in the red zone.

Here are the key takeaways from the Patriots win!

Kyler Murray out, Colt McCoy in
The game took an immediate turn for the worse for Cardinals fans when Kyler Murray went down in a heap while scrambling on the third play from scrimmage. Murray would not return, ruled out with a knee injury, he was replaced by veteran Colt McCoy who already had two starts in relief this season. New England’s defense caught a break not having to deal with the added threat of Murray’s mobility.

The 12-year veteran beat the Patriots as a rookie with the Browns back in 2010, but lost his second start against New England, coming with Washington in 2019. As expected, the veteran got the ball out quick and was able to complete a number of passes to show some early promise.

After a missed field goal and a punt, McCoy led the Cardinals on three-straight scoring drives in the first half, culminating with two field goals and then a tough run by James Conner that got Arizona into the end zone for the first time in the game as they extended a 13-7 lead.

But that was the high point for the McCoy-led attack.

Injuries strike, opportunity knocks
The Cardinals weren’t the only ones to see their gameplan turned on its head, as New England saw a multitude of injuries hit in the first half, starting with cornerback Jack Jones (knee) and then followed by wide receiver DeVante Parker (head) and running back Rhamondre Stevenson (ankle). Jones and Parker would not return while Stevenson would give it a go but ultimately return to the locker room for the remained of the contest.

With limited depth at both corner and running back, Marcus Jones and Kevin Harris saw their roles elevated in the game while rookie receiver Tyquan Thornton also saw his snaps increase. Harris took advantage of the opportunity early, scoring the first touchdown of both the game and his career to give the Patriots a first-half 7-3 lead. The touchdown also gave the Patriots their first red zone touchdown since Week 9.

After Harris fumbled in the second quarter, Pierre Strong got an extended look, busting off an impressive 44-yard scamper in the third quarter that set up the game-tying field goal, which evened the game at 13. He’d later add on a touchdown score of his own in the fourth quarter.

The two rookie running backs haven’t seen much action this year but Stevenson’s injury forced them into the fire and both delivered with touchdowns.

End of half fireworks
The Patriots were dropping into a familiar lull during the first half of the game, as the Cardinals started to consistently move the ball and put up points, while New England’s offense once again looked sporadic at best with badly-timed penalties and mistakes mixed in.

It looked like the Cardinals were about to build on their 13-7 lead until an excellent two-play sequence by the Patriots defense got them off the field for the first time in three possessions. First, Matthew Judon got a stop in the backfield on third down, forcing the Cardinals to go for it on 4th-and-1. Jahlani Tavai then made a second-straight play by the defense, deflecting the pass attempt to give the Patriots back the ball for one final chance at getting back on the scoreboard before halftime.

Mac Jones and the offense would deliver, with a 30-yard strike up the seam to Hunter Henry getting the offense within striking distance. But another mistake would kill their chances to take a shot to the end zone for a touchdown, with a Kevin Harris fumble ending the progress and forcing a field goal attempt. Nick Folk still delivered with a much-needed 51-yard field goal that made it 13-10 Arizona at the half.

Takeaways break stalemate
Tied at 13, the teams traded the ball back and forth in the third quarter until DeAndre Hopkins put the ball on the ground and Raekwon McMillan was on the spot to pick it up and take it to the house, breaking the tie and giving the Pats a 20-13 lead. It capped off a run of 13-straight points for the Patriots as they climbed out of a deficit for one of the few times this season.

On the next possession, Josh Uche’s pressure helped force an early throw by McCoy that was picked off by Marcus Jones. The Patriots offense would respond this time with a 39-yard strike to Hunter Henry, then Pierre Strong would finish it off one play later to extend New England’s lead to 27-13.

With two-straight fourth-down stops, then followed by two-straight takeaways, the Patriots defense was the catalyst for the comeback win.

Patriots are now 7-6
The Patriots get back their winning season record with the victory, breaking their two-game losing streak and improving to 7-6 on the 2022 campaign. While the team was fortunate to see the Cardinals offense ravaged by an injury to their starting quarterback on the very first drive, at this point in the season style points are out the window, all that matters is getting the win and that’s what the Patriots got even if they didn’t suddenly answer all the questions that have surrounded their struggles.

For the time being, the Pats slip into the seventh playoff slot in the AFC, fending off a rising Chargers team and a Jets team coming off a tough loss to the Bills. But the race in the conference is far from over and the Patriots will look to maintain their spot when they travel to Las Vegas to face Josh McDaniels and the 5-8 Raiders this Sunday.

2022 NFL season, Week 14: What We Learned from Patriots’ win over Cardinals on Monday night

Depth wins for New England. This game got ugly on the injury front early. New England lost DeVante Parker to a head injury and defensive back Jack Jones to a knee ailment early, then watched bulldozing running back Rhamondre Stevenson exit with an ankle injury. Stevenson returned briefly before leaving for good, thinning out the Patriots’ list of game-changers on the road. No matter for Bill Belichick’s squad, which turned to its depth to take home a win. South Dakota State product Pierre Strong finally saw the field after spending most of the season on ice and didn’t waste much time before making an impact, catching a Mac Jones pass for a 16-yard gain and using his top-flight speed to race around the left end for a 44-yard gain on the ground, setting up a game-tying Nick Folk field goal. Sixth-round rookie Kevin Harris joined the party, too, picking up 32 yards and scoring a touchdown on his first three carries to give the Patriots an early 7-3 lead. The offense was far from perfect, but the Patriots were able to turn to their lesser-known players to win a game they absolutely needed at this point in the season. We shouldn’t expect anything less from a Belichick squad.

Cardinals just can’t shake their mistakes. We’ll start with Arizona’s eight penalties, which consistently undercut its ability to put together meaningful drives, but it was more than that. Arizona failed on two important fourth-down attempts, including one with a wide-open target (Trey McBride) that was broken up by Jahlani Tavai and bought the Patriots just enough time to kick a field goal to end the half. The other failed conversion — before things got desperate and required Arizona to go for it — happened because Marquise Brown dropped a pass downfield. DeAndre Hopkins made a couple of crucial mistakes, including an illegal shift that wiped out a 15-yard gain with the Cardinals trailing by 14 points, and a fumble that happened solely because Hopkins didn’t tuck the ball away securely when running after the catch. That fumble resulted in a Raekwon McMillan fumble-return touchdown, putting the Patriots ahead in what was previously a tie game. Add in a missed field goal and you have a collection of mistakes that narrowed Arizona’s already slim margin for error. This stuff isn’t just a coincidence, but symptomatic of everything that has been wrong with the Cardinals this season. If you need an explanation for Arizona’s disappointing campaign, this game was a good example.

A tough season gets exponentially worse for Arizona. Kyler Murray already missed two games due to a hamstring issue this season, and Monday night produced an injury that will likely end his season. Murray was in the midst of a trademark scramble when he attempted to cut upfield to avoid a defender. Instead of pulling off the move for extra yards, Murray crumpled to the ground, grabbing his knee in pain and exiting via cart on just the third play from scrimmage. Kliff Kingsbury said afterward that it doesn’t look good for Murray, meaning we can expect the worst. For a Cardinals team that never fully exited the starting blocks in 2022, this is likely the final blow that should send them to darkness, and it’s no fault of backup quarterback Colt McCoy. We already saw what might end up proving to be the high-water mark for McCoy back in Week 10, when he finished with over 230 passing yards and a 96.5 passer rating in a win over the Rams. McCoy is a gritty, tireless competitor who pours himself into preparation in the event he’s called upon, but his ceiling doesn’t inspire much hope. It seems as if the Cardinals, a team with enough talent on paper to contend, are headed nowhere with one month left.

Josh Uche is on fire. It took him until Week 8 to make an impact, but if you haven’t paid attention to Uche in the last two months, it’s time to catch up. The third-year edge rusher is enjoying one heck of a run, recording seven sacks in his last five games entering Monday night. He built on that against Arizona, recording three more sacks as part of five total tackles. Uche wasn’t just getting after the quarterback, though. When he couldn’t quite get home on a second-down play late in the third quarter, he used his hands to great effect, deflecting a McCoy pass and sending it toward the State Farm Stadium roof. The ball fell into the hands of two-way dynamo Marcus Jones for an interception. Five plays later, Strong was in the end zone, giving the Patriots a commanding 27-13 lead. Matthew Judon rightfully attracts the most attention on New England’s defense, but it’s about much more than just the man with the red sleeves. Players like Uche make this group a legitimate threat, and on Monday night, that threat proved to be valid.

Patriots snap big-stage losing streak to pull even with Jets. New England entered Monday night owning an 0-3 record in exclusive window games this season, losing on Monday Night Football, Thanksgiving and Thursday Night Football in 2022. Their fourth such contest went much differently, and could help them mount a late-season push for the playoffs. Thanks to New York’s three losses in its last month (including a defeat at the hands of the Patriots for a New England season sweep), the Patriots received a second chance at fighting their way back into the hunt. At 7-6, they own the head-to-head tiebreaker with New York and are building momentum that could produce an unlikely playoff berth. The road doesn’t get any easier, with road games against the Raiders and Bills sandwiching home dates with the Bengals and Dolphins, but the Patriots deserve credit for overcoming a two-game losing streak by traveling across the country and taking down the woeful Cardinals. They’ll have to repeat this performance, with defense leading the way, but they have a chance at this point, and considering how this season has gone, that’s all they can ask for.

Next Gen stat of the game: Pierre Strong reached a max speed of 20.86 mph on his 44-yard rush, the fastest top speed for a Patriots ball-carrier this season. His plus-35 rushing yards over expected are the second-most on a single carry for the Patriots this season.

NFL Research: Josh Uche’s three-sack performance gave him 10 sacks since Week 8, the most in the NFL in that span. Matthew Judon’s 1.5 sacks, meanwhile, moved him into a tie with San Francisco’s Nick Bosa for the league lead (14.5 sacks).

The New England Patriots and Arizona Cardinals played on Monday Night Football to conclude NFL Week 14. Look back at our updates from the game.

Cardinals lose Kyler Murray to injury in Monday Night Football loss to Patriots

The Arizona Cardinals’ rough season just got rougher.

Arizona fell to 4-9 on the year with a 27-13 NFL Week 14 loss to the New England Patriots on Monday Night Football at State Farm Stadium, but the team also lost quarterback Kyler Murray to an injury on the third play of the game.

Murray left the game with a non-contact knee injury after running for a 3-yard gain.

He is scheduled to undergo an MRI on Tuesday, but left the field on a cart with a towel over his head, clearly dejected.

Colt McCoy went 27-for-40 passing for 246 yards and an interception in relief of Murray.

Arizona led 13-7 near the end of the first half, but Nick Folk hit a 51-yard field goal to make it 13-10 as the first half ended and the Patriots outscored the Cardinals 17-0 in the second half.

They took a 20-13 lead in the third quarter on a 23-yard fumble return for a touchdown by Raekwon McMillan after Cardinals receiver DeAndre Hopkins fumbled the ball while carelessly running with it with just one hand, failing to secure it.

The Patriots turned on the pressure on McCoy in the second half, ending up with six total sacks and a lot of QB pressures.

The Cardinals were 1-for-5 on fourth downs in the game.

New England outgained Arizona in the game, 328-323.

Mac Jones went 24-for-35 passing for the Patriots, throwing one interception.

Pierre Strong had 70 yards on just five carries, adding a touchdown for New England, who also got a rushing touchdown from rookie Kevin Harris.

James Conner had 85 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries for the Cardinals.

Hopkins led all receivers in the game with seven catches for 79 yards.

The Cardinals play the Broncos in Denver next Sunday.

The Patriots, who improved to 7-6 with the win, play at the Raiders in NFL Week 15.

Arizona turns ball over again on downs, Patriots run out clock
This game is over.

The Cardinals’ defense forced another Patriots’ punt, but the offense turned the ball over on downs for the fourth time in the game after a 6-play, 17-yard drive.

Colt McCoy was sacked six times on the night, and he was pressured a lot more.

The Patriots ran out the clock for the 27-13 win.

Final score: Patriots 27, Cardinals 13

Cardinals turn ball over on downs again
The Arizona Cardinals are 1-for-4 on fourth downs in the game after turning the ball over on downs on their most recent possession.

Arizona’s drive took 10 plays and went for just 21 yards. It took 4:53 off the clock.

The Patriots’ defense hasn’t been giving Colt McCoy much time as they have ramped up the pressure on the Cardinals’ QB. He was sacked on 4th & 13 on Arizona’s most recent 4th-down attempt.

Cardinals force three-and-out
The Cardinals’ defense is attempting to give itself a chance.

The unit just forced a three-and-out to give the ball back to the offense.

Cardinals’ offense doesn’t help defense as Patriots return fumble for touchdown
First, the good news: Arizona’s defense forced the Patriots to a three-and-out, giving the Cardinals the ball back at their own 6-yard line.

Now, the bad: On the second play of the Cardinals’ drive, DeAndre Hopkins fumbled the ball after a 4-yard catch, and Raekwon McMillan ran it back 23 yards for a touchdown to give the Patriots a 20-13 lead.

Hopkins was careless with the football, holding it with just one hand. McMillan ran untouched into the end zone after the fumble recovery.
