Tulsi Gabbard says she is leaving the Democratic Party

Written by on October 11, 2022

Former Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard announced Tuesday that she is leaving the Democratic Party.

Driving the news: “I can no longer remain in today’s Democratic Party that is under the complete control of an elitist cabal of warmongers who are driven by cowardly wokeness, who divide us by racializing every issue and stoking anti-white racism,” she said in a video posted on Twitter.

The big picture: Gabbard, who sought the Democratic nomination during the 2020 election, supports policy positions, particularly in the foreign policy realm, often out of line with the Democratic mainstream.

Her positions during the 2020 campaign led her to receive a boost from conservative voices, Axios’ Sara Fischer reports.

Tulsi Gabbard leaves Democratic Party, denounces it as ‘elitist cabal’

Tulsi Gabbard argues the Democrats have given into ‘cowardly wokeness’ and ‘anti-white racism’

Former Democratic presidential candidate Tulsi Gabbard announced she left the Democratic Party on Tuesday, denouncing the organization as an “elitist cabal.”

Gabbard, who retired from the House of Representatives in 2021, attacked the institution in a nearly 30-minute video posted to her YouTube account. She did not announce plans to join the Republican Party or adopt any other political affiliation, however.

“I can no longer remain in today’s Democratic Party that is now under the complete control of an elitist cabal of warmongers driven by cowardly wokeness, who divide us by racializing every issue & stoke anti-white racism,” Gabbard said in an excerpt posted to Twitter.

“I believe in a government that is of the people, by the people and for the people. Unfortunately, today’s Democratic Party does not. Instead, it stands for a government that is of, by and for the powerful elite,” she continued. “I’m calling on my fellow common sense, independent-minded Democrats to join me in leaving the Democratic Party.”

Gabbard’s announcement served as the inaugural episode of “The Tusli Gabbard Show,” a podcast she is now running.

Gabbard has grown increasingly estranged from the Democratic establishment since her failed candidacy in the 2020 presidential primary. She has also become a vocal critic of President Biden, denouncing him for “pouring fuel on the flames” of division in the country.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich praised Tulsi for ditching the Democrats in a Tuesday statement on Fox News. He argued that she is one of many Americans who traditionally have voted blue but now find the Democrats unrecognizable.

[Gabbard] has always been sort of an independent maverick,” Gingrich said. “And I think when she ran for president, she realized how really isolated she was from the great majority of the Democratic Party, which is now, frankly, a pretty weird party….I think you’re seeing this drift. And we’ve certainly seen among Latinos a huge drift towards the Republican Party as they’re driven away by the weirder policies of the Democratic Party.”

Tulsi Gabbard says she’s leaving the Democratic Party

Former Rep. Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii said Tuesday she is leaving the Democratic Party because it is controlled by an “elitist cabal” that is courting nuclear war and is too hostile toward people of faith and the police.

Ms. Gabbard, who served in Congress from 2013 to 2021, posted a Twitter video outlining her complaints with her former party.

She said Democrats are “driven by cowardly wokeness” and make everything about race, and they “actively work to undermine our God-given freedoms, are hostile to people of faith & spirituality, demonize the police & protect criminals at the expense of law-abiding Americans, believe in open borders, weaponize the national security state to go after political opponents, and above all, dragging us ever closer to nuclear war.”

Ms. Gabbard, an Army reserve officer who makes television appearances, has sparred with her party before, including complaints about the nominating process in 2016 after she endorsed Sen. Bernard Sanders, Vermont independent, for president.

She met with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad during the Syrian civil war, raising eyebrows, and often speaks out against military interventions.

Tulsi Gabbard leaves Democratic Party, denounces ‘control of an elitist cabal of warmongers’

Former Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard announced she is leaving the Democratic Party, denouncing lawmakers on the Left for promoting policies that “[racialize] every issue & stoke anti-white racism.”

In a video announcement released on Tuesday, Gabbard called on other members of the party to abandon the Democratic Party, accusing the Left of only protecting the “powerful elite.” It’s not clear what party Gabbard plans to join next or if she intends to remain independent.

“I can no longer remain in today’s Democratic Party that is now under the complete control of an elitist cabal of warmongers driven by cowardly wokeness, who divide us by racializing every issue & stoke anti-white racism, actively work to undermine our God-given freedoms, are hostile to people of faith & spirituality, demonize the police & protect criminals at the expense of law-abiding Americans, believe in open borders, weaponize the national security state to go after political opponents, and above all, dragging us ever closer to nuclear war,” Gabbard said. “If you can no longer stomach the direction that so-called woke Democratic Party ideologues are taking our country, I invite you to join me.”

Gabbard, a one-time presidential hopeful for the Democratic Party, retired from the House in 2021. Since then, the former Hawaii representative has been publicly critical of the party, particularly toward President Joe Biden.

“I believe in a government that is of, by, and for the people. Unfortunately, today’s Democratic Party does not. Instead, it stands for a government of, by, and for the powerful elite,” Gabbard said. “I’m calling on my fellow common sense independent-minded Democrats to join me in leaving the Democratic Party.”

Gabbard, who unsuccessfully ran for the Democratic Party presidential nomination in the 2020 election, made the announcement in a video posted on Twitter, in which she accused the Democrats of stoking “anti-white racism,” and “dragging us ever closer to nuclear war.”

She also announced the launch of The Tulsi Gabbard Show, with the first 28-minute episode titled Why I’m leaving the Democratic Party uploaded to YouTube.

Explaining her decision to leave Gabbard said: “I can no longer remain in today’s Democratic Party that is now under the complete control of an elitist cabal of warmongers driven by cowardly wokeness, who divide us by racializing every issue & stoke anti-white racism, actively work to undermine our God-given freedoms, hostile to people of faith & spirituality, demonize the police & protect criminals at the expense of law-abiding Americans, believe in open borders, weaponize the national security state to go after political opponents, and above all, dragging us ever closer to nuclear war.”

“I believe in a government that is of, by, and for the people,” she said. “Unfortunately, today’s Democratic Party does not. Instead, it stands for a government of, by, and for the powerful elite. I’m calling on my fellow common sense independent-minded Democrats to join me in leaving the Democratic Party.

“If you can no longer stomach the direction that so-called woke Democratic Party ideologues are taking our country, I invite you to join me.”

Gabbard, a military veteran who served in Iraq with the Hawaii Army National Guard, represented Hawaii’s 2nd congressional district in the House of Representatives between 2013 and 2021.

In 2020, after fellow Democrat Kai Kahele announced a challenge for her seat, Gabbard said she would not seek reelection to focus on her presidential bid.

Gabbard accused Democratic rivals of “rigging” the party primary, before dropping out and endorsing Joe Biden in March 2020.

Over the past few months, Gabbard has attracted attention for her controversial views on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which she insists is a “proxy” war between the U.S. and Russia.

In June, she suggested top U.S. officials may be guilty of “treason” for saying deferring on war aims to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

“Every time this Admin has been asked what the goal of our war with Russia is, using Ukrainians as our proxy, (i.e. how will we know when victory is achieved?) they’ve dodged the question by declaring the president of Ukraine will make that decision & the U.S. will follow his leadership,” she wrote on Twitter.

“So, the most important foreign policy position our country has faced in the last 60 years is not being made by US Congress or an American president, but by the leader of a foreign country.

“If handing over American sovereignty to the leader of another country isn’t treason, what is?”

Gabbard’s decision to leave the Democratic party was welcomed by Jon Cooper, a prominent Biden supporter who co-founded the Democratic Coalition Against Trump in 2016.

He tweeted: “Hallelujah! Putin ass-kisser Tulsi Gabbard is finally leaving the Democratic Party. With luck, she’ll move to Russia. Good riddance, traitor!!!”

Tulsi Gabbard leaving ‘elitist’ Democratic Party, blasts ‘cowardly wokeness’

Former Democratic House member and presidential candidate Tulsi Gabbard announced she was leaving the party Tuesday — blasting it as an “an elitist cabal” driven by “cowardly wokeness.”

“I can no longer remain in today’s Democratic Party that is now under the complete control of an elitist cabal of warmongers driven by cowardly wokeness, who divide us by racializing every issue and stoke anti-white racism, actively work to undermine our God-given freedoms that are enshrined in our Constitution,” Gabbard, 41, said in a searing video posted on Twitter.

She then accused party leaders of weaponizing national security “to go after their political opponents, and above all, who are dragging us ever closer to nuclear war.”

Gabbard, who endorsed Joe Biden’s candidacy after dropping out of the presidential race, said she believes in a government “that’s of the people, by the people and for the people.”

“Unfortunately, today’s Democratic Party does not. Instead it stands for a government that is of, by, and for the powerful elite,” she said.

Gabbard also addressed other disillusioned “common-sense” Democrats — calling on them to follow her lead.

“I’m calling on my fellow common sense, independent-minded Democrats to join me in leaving the Democratic Party,” she said.

Gabbard did not say in her message whether she would join the Republican Party, register as a political independent, or join or start a third party. She spoke in February to the Conservative Political Action Network, in which she called for unity and deplored “the power elites” who are eroding individual rights.

Gabbard did not say in her message whether she would join the Republican Party, register as a political independent, or join or start a third party. She spoke in February to the Conservative Political Action Network, in which she called for unity and deplored “the power elites” who are eroding individual rights.

“We have too many people in positions of power whose foremost responsibility is to protect our freedoms and uphold our God-given rights, and yet they are the ones who are actually trying to take these rights away from us,” Gabbard said in those remarks. “This is the biggest threat to our country. It is not coming from some foreign country — it is coming from power elites here at home and their co-conspirators in the mainstream media and the security state who are working to undermine our freedoms.”

At the time, Gabbard accused the president of equating Trump followers with terrorists “in an attempt to intimidate them into silence.”

“So he’s essentially saying that this, ‘MAGA crowd’ are worse than terrorists. This is outrageous. And so for every American who’s watching, every American who’s seen this, no matter how you feel about the MAGA crowd, this is an authoritarian assault on our freedom,” Gabbard told Fox News’ Sean Hannity.

Gabbard has also called out former President Barack Obama for “refusing” to say “Islamic extremists” are waging a war against the United States.

Known for her strong libertarian streak, Gabbard has spoken about the need to ban private prisons and emphasize rehabilitation in the criminal justice system.

An advocate for abortion rights, Gabbard has called state laws that would restrict the procedure “extremely dangerous.”

“It completely takes away the freedom of women to choose whether or not to have an abortion – even if a woman/girl is a victim of rape or incest. This law must be rejected,” she said on Twitter in May 2019 while criticizing an Alabama statute.
