Manchester United receive boost as Chelsea end interest in Andre Onana

The 27-year-old has been a target for both the Blues and the Red Devils, with the Premier League sides looking for new goalkeepers this summer.

The Evening Standard reports that Chelsea have already held talks with Inter over a move for the former Ajax stopper back in April, but have now pulled out of any pursuit of him.

That leaves Manchester United in an excellent position to sign the Cameroon international, if they are ready to spend £50m on his services.

Onana worked with Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag during their time together at Ajax and could be lined up to play under the Dutchman again, just one year after moving to Inter and signing a five-year contract in Milan.

Chelsea are still keen to sign a new goalkeeper this summer, with Edouard Mendy likely to leave and Kepa Arrizabalaga never really convincing since moving to the Premier League.

Their other targets include Valencia’s Giorgi Mamardashvili, Borussia Dortmund’s Gregor Kobel and David Raya of Brentford, with the Standard stating that Mamardashvili is the likeliest to be the subject of a bid.

There does remain some uncertainty over the goalkeeper position at Old Trafford, with the club stating that they are still in talks with David De Gea over a new contract.

The Spaniard is out of contract with Manchester United and may still stay, but is unlikely to want to do so if he is not first choice, while Onana would be unlikely to want to join the club if he wasn’t guaranteed a starting role.
