Man Utd could seal £40m Andre Onana deal tonight and cut ties to David de Gea

Manchester United could signal the end of David de Gea’s 12-season spell at the club by signing his replacement – and it could happen this evening

Manchester United could signal the end of David de Gea’s time at the club this evening.

The Red Devils are chasing the singing of Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana after De Gea’s contract expired at the end of June, despite talks taking place over a new deal.

Onana, who worked with Erik ten Hag at Ajax before sitting out of football with a nine-month doping ban – later joining Inter Milan and reaching the Champions League final.

The Mirror report that talks took a major step forward on Thursday (July 6) with a verbal agreement reached – with a deal worth around £40million on the brink of completion.

The 27-year-old’s arrival would see him become United’s first-choice goalkeeper, which is likely to push De Gea to find a new challenge elsewhere.

The Spaniard, 32, has made a string of high-profile mistakes in recent seasons to remind fans of his early struggles after joining from Atletico Madrid.

De Gea, who hasn’t played for his country since being dropped in 2020, has received stern criticism, particularly from Roy Keane.

United are also in talks with Justin Bijlow of Feyenoord, but Onana remains their priority.

The Cameroon international made a total of 41 appearances in Italy last season, conceding 36 goals while winning the Coppa Italia and Supercoppa.

Despite takeover uncertainty, United have already announced the signing of Mason Mount and Onana could now follow.

Ten Hag said at the end of the season: “We are also planning for the future, for next season and that’s what we have to do.

“And that is also talking with your scouting department, recruitment responsibilities, and talking with players of course.”

Sheikh Jassim is currently leading there race to buy the club from the Glazers, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s Ineos Group still in talks.
