Wednesday marked the return of the Hulu series Wu-Tang: An American Saga. The show chronicles the formation and rise of the rap group Wu-Tang Clan, but it’s not the first time the group’s story has been told.
Alex Tse was recruited to help RZA executive produce the show, which is the first time the Wu’s journey has been shared via a scripted series. He says he didn’t feel pressure bringing the show to life in this format, as he had The Abbot by his side.
“RZA made it really easy for me, made me feel very comfortable,” he tells ABC Audio. “I came at it as a fan. Huge fan … so it was … an honor and a privilege,” he says, noting he was “ready to embrace the challenge. I had a great partner on it that had his own Hollywood career and understood everything about the process.”
This season of An American Saga is the third and final one of the series. It sees the group following the release of their debut album and captures the members working toward their solo albums. As a story spanning several years, the series is only a fraction of Wu’s entire journey, but RZA says they made sure to narrow it down and include the “nutrients.”
“Me, Alex and the team of writers, we were able to hear the big story … as some of the guys will call in or I’ll give stories or we’ll research. But being able to then narrow that down to the nutrients … And then put it to the 10 episodes of the third season, I think we did a great job with that.”
He describes the season as “super dope,” while Alex says it’s “risk-taking.” (AUDIO IS ABC 1-ON-1)
