What The Sex Lives of College Girls’ Reneé Rapp Is Listening To

Written by on January 23, 2023

Reneé Rapp: This is my favorite album in the whole world. Now everyone is so obsessed with Frank Ocean, and I’m very territorial—I’m like, “Nah bitch, I’ve been here.”

When Blonde came out, I was 16 and driving in the car with my best friend Justin. I was like, “This is all over the place, but it’s perfect. I’m so confused, but I know exactly what this means.” It was such a pivotal point in my life—I was starting to be in relationships and I had just come out. Listening to it is the best and the worst feeling ever. It’s like you’re being ripped apart, all the way.

Jazmine Sullivan: Heaux Tales

Jazmine Sullivan is my vocal Bible. And I will never forget—when I was 16 or 17, I was having a meeting with this guy at Sony, and he was like, “Who’s your favorite artist?” And I said Jazmine Sullivan. And he said, “She doesn’t have any hits.” I got so angry. I was so young, and I was like, “I want to tell you, you’re the dumbest person I’ve ever listened to in my entire fucking life. You fucking suck because it’s your job to take an incredible singer like that and make sure that she is in the right space and is marketed properly.”

When Heaux Tales came out, she won a Grammy. And I was like, “Yes, this is the level of support and backing that this woman deserves.” More than that, to be clear. I think she’s the greatest singer of our fucking generation. No one has that thing that she has.

Kacey Musgraves: star-crossed

I’m from North Carolina, and so I’m very anti-country music. The culture was very much like, [singing] “na-na-na-na I’m in a tractor” and I was like, “No, I’m not doing that shit.” A lot of those people were homophobic. Then a year ago I was in Santa Barbara with some friends after a bad breakup, and someone who I really respected was like, “Do you like Kacey Musgraves?” I was like, “Fuck no.” And he was like, “You need to listen to this song.”

It was “Camera Roll,” and I was destroyed. The writing is so delicate and perfect. And then I listened to “Breadwinner” and was like, “I know this man. I’ve dated him three times.”

The whole reason I wrote [my song] “In the Kitchen” was because of “Camera Roll.” I had gotten off the phone with some people on my team and they’re like, “You need to dig deeper. We don’t feel you.” I said, “Alright, what’s my version of ‘Camera Roll?’”
