ASUR 2 is the story of a faceless man creating havoc in the country. The season starts immediately after the events of the first part. Dhananjay Rajpoot aka DJ (Arshad Warsi) is disillusioned for failing to catch the mysterious Shubh Joshi. He runs away to Dharamshala and seeks refuge in a monastery. Here, he meets a young boy, Anant (Atharva Vishwakarma), who has a deep understanding of the realities of life. Nikhil Nair (Barun Sobti) is in deep trauma over losing his daughter, Rhea. His wife Naina (Anupriya Goenka) is also shattered but is trying her best to locate Swati, who killed Rhea. Her efforts prove successful as she tracks her down in Manali. On the other hand, Shubh informs the CBI that he’s about to kill three people, all at the same time – 9:05 pm. He even leaves hints of the location but doesn’t tell who his targets are. Despite the best efforts of the CBI, Shubh is able to eliminate all his three targets. CBI is left scratching their heads as they are unable to understand how the three victims died of heart attack, that too, at the same time. Meanwhile, Ishani (Adithi Kalkunte Shyamprasad) joins the CBI. She’s sharp and intelligent and while working on the murder case of Officer Lolark Dubey (Sharib Hashmi), she realizes that Rasul Shaikh (Amey Wagh) could be the murderer. She informs about her observation to her senior, Shashank Awasthi (Pawan Chopra) and also later to Nikhil. Both don’t take her seriously, more so because she doesn’t have any concrete proof. As CBI grapples with finding Shubh and stopping him from committing any more murders, a surprise development takes place. The ATF (Anti-Terrorist Force) takes up the case, headed by an officer named Paul (Meiyang Chang). Nikhil, Nusrat Saeed (Ridhi Dogra), Naina, Ishani and Rasul are compelled to work with Paul, leading to disagreements and arguments. What happens next forms the rest of the series.

Web Series Review: Asur 2

Gaurav Shukla and Abhijeet Khuman’s story is thrilling and praiseworthy. Gaurav Shukla and Abhijeet Khuman’s screenplay is highly engaging. A lot happens in the show at every moment and one can’t help but get thoroughly involved with the goings-on. The way the writers have fleshed out the character of Shubh and his thought process are seen to be believed. Gaurav Shukla, Abhijeet Khuman and Suraj Gianani’s dialogues are powerful, especially the ones mouthed by Shubh and the wonder-boy Anant. In fact, without these hard-hitting one-liners, ASUR 2 wouldn’t have generated the desired impact.

Oni Sen’s direction is top-notch. He has successfully taken the tension levels one level up, as compared to the previous season. He has also worked on character arcs and in this regard, he has scored a sixer with the character of Shubh. This time, viewers get to know more about his journey and his actual intention. The manner in which he outsmarts CBI and keeps them on tenterhooks makes for a brilliant watch. Moreover, the tracks of DJ, Naina, Nikhil, Nusrat etc also form an important part of the show and Oni Sen is able to seamlessly blend them with the main narrative. His other achievement is that though it’s 8 episodes long, it doesn’t get boring or slow ever.

On the flipside, there are far too many cinematic liberties. Shubh is able to execute all his plans successfully without any agencies getting a hint and after a point, it gets too much. There also are too many characters and one might lose track of who is who at places. Things also happen at convenience. At one point in the show, the CBI officers are able to locate a hideout by checking for places which have high data consumption. Surprisingly, they don’t use the same modus operandi to track down Shubh, though they were able to find out the region where he’s based.

ASUR 2 begins with a recap of the first season. This was much needed as Season 1 had released more than 3 years ago. After establishing the characters and their traumas, the makers begin the story and the madness. The murder sequence of the three victims in the first episode is engrossing. Some more scenes that are memorable are Ishani secretly entering Rasul’s house and what happens thereafter, Nusrat’s kidnapping episode, DJ meeting Vrinda Shrivastav (Barkha Sengupta) and Shubh’s past. The scenes of Anant are also quite superb, especially in the second last episode. The finale episode is truly nail-biting and the season ends on a high.

Speaking of performances, Arshad Warsi is excellent as usual. He’s known for his comic timing and in this series, he is able to break that image successfully and deliver a worthy performance. Barun Sobti is natural and able to bring out the trauma realistically. Anupriya Goenka has a fine screen presence and delivers a top-notch performance. Ridhi Dogra does well but gets sidelined. Also, her family track is forced. Adithi Kalkunte Shyamprasad rocks the show, despite having limited screen time. Abhishek Chauhan (Shubh) also has a limited role but is memorable. Veshesh Bansal (Teenage Shubh) is fiery. Gaurav Chopra (Kesar Bharadwaj) is dependable. Amey Wagh is quite good and this time, he induces fear. Meiyang Chang looks every inch a no-nonsense, assertive officer. Pawan Chopra is decent. Atharva Vishwakarma is adorable. Barkha Sengupta is fair. Pramod Moutho (Professor Venkat Rao) and Anurita Jha (Kamini) do very well. Kabir Jai Bedi (Kevin), Sameer Malhotra (Arjun Bhalla), Neha Vyas (Swati) and others are fine.

Dharmaraj Bhatt’s background score is exhilarating and enhances the impact. Ramanuj Dutta’s cinematography is neat. The lensman captures the diverse locales beautifully. Sheetal Duggal’s production design is appropriate. Shubh’s hideout, especially, stands out. Sunil Rodrigues’ action is limited but impactful. Vijaylaxmi Soni’s costumes are realistic. Charu Takkar’s editing is sharp.

On the whole, ASUR 2 is a worthy sequel and will be loved for its thrilling and nail-biting moments, powerful dialogues and exemplary performances. The first part has a huge following and moreover, the new season will be available for free on Jio Cinema. As a result, it can fetch record viewership.
