Warner Bros. Altered The Flash’s Ending Between Screenings

Written by on June 4, 2023

Warner Bros. Discovery reportedly edited The Flash between screenings to keep its “secret ending” under wraps.

A source for Variety explained why Warner Bros. chose to throw just one premiere for the DC Studios film four days ahead of its theatrical release. According to the source, this decision had nothing to do with star Ezra Miller, who will take red carpet photos at the Los Angeles premiere but do no interviews or press for the movie. Instead, the lone premiere is part of Warner’s plan “to keep the ‘secret ending’ under wraps.”

Reportedly, this secret ending was changed multiple times before The Flash screened at CinemaCon in late April 2023. At the convention, the version shown to attendees had a portion of its final scene cut out. More screenings were done in Burbank, California this past week, and although the final scene was present, key elements were blurred out. The Flash director Andy Muschietti said previously, “”If you see the movie on the sixteenth or after, you’ll notice that there’s a couple surprises there that we wanted to leave for the release of the movie to avoid any kind of possible leaks and stuff.”

Spoilers for The Flash That Have Leaked

Despite these measures taken by Warner Bros., some spoilers for The Flash have still surfaced ahead of release. In May, Muschietti himself shared that actor Nic Cage appears as Superman in The Flash, a shocking reveal following the actor’s failed opportunity to play the Man of Steel in Tim Burton’s scrapped Superman Lives movie. Fans also discovered that Aquaman actor Jason Momoa not only appears, but has a musical number in The Flash. The film’s soundtrack lists that Momoa will perform a song called “I’m a Sailor,” despite a promo indicating that Aquaman doesn’t exist in the DC Universe after the Flash alters history.

The Flash Adapts Flashpoint to Reset the DCU

The Flash draws inspiration from DC Comics’ Flashpoint by writer Geoff Johns and Adam Kubert. In this story, Flash Barry Allen travels back in time to save his mother from being murdered when he was just a child. This has a ripple effect on the entire DC Universe, changing the lives of heroes and villains alike.

When Miller’s Barry saves his mother in The Flash, this creates an alternate version of the live-action DCU. Sasha Calle’s Supergirl now exists instead of Henry Cavill’s Superman, and Michael Keaton’s Bruce Wayne is the DCU’s Batman instead of Ben Affleck’s. Similar to how Flashpoint led to DC Comics’ New 52 reboot, according to DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn, The Flash is set to reset the existing DCU that began in 2013 with Man of Steel. This will pave the way for a revamped DCU mapped out by Gunn and co-CEO Peter Safran, which officially begins with Gunn’s Superman: Legacy film set to release in 2025.

The Flash races into theaters on June 16, 2023.
