Community members and leaders gathered Monday at a vigil for Tyre Nichols, whose death after being beaten by Memphis police has drawn outrage nationwide.

Organizers chose to host the remembrance vigil at the Regency Community Skatepark in North Natomas, a place where his childhood friends said they shared a lot of memories together with him.

“We chose this skatepark because this is where everyone knew Tyre from,” said close friend Angelina Paxton. “This is where our childhood memories are from.”

A couple of hundred people from different backgrounds and faiths attended Monday’s vigil, all with thoughts to share or prayers to offer were encouraged by District 1 councilmember Lisa Kaplan to come forward and address the crowd.

“One thing about Tyre that I’m sure all of us can agree on [is] he just had this overwhelming urge to make everyone smile,” said friend Ryan Wilson.

Tyre’s sister, Keyana Dixon, and his brother, Jamal Dupree, both spoke on behalf of Nichols’ family.

“I just wanted to thank all of you for the continued support of our family and just making sure his name is never forgotten,” Dixon said.

The group — lifting up the legacy he leaves as a loved family member and friend — feeling comfort in knowing Tyre would be at peace with the mark in the world his life made.

“He was such a good person,” said longtime friend Dijon Hills. “He’s definitely going to Heaven, and that makes him an angel. So now we have him as an angel, to like, look over us.”
