US box office: Black Adam wins the weekend with $ 67 million
Written by ABC AUDIO on October 24, 2022
It was finally a weekend under the banner of normality at the American box office: normality in the presence of a certain variety of films in theaters, and normality in the takings which are then a consequence. The release of Black Adam clearly drew a lot of viewers to the cinema, but we also had a bit of counter-programming with Ticket to Paradise and then the excellent performance of the horror Smile. A total of 113 million dollars were collected, almost 50% more than last week and a slight increase even on the same weekend a year ago. It is the first time that 100 million has been exceeded in 13 weeks, that is, since July 22/24, when Nope pushed its receipts to a total of 126 million.
There was a lot of anticipation about Black Adam’s debut, and over the course of the weekend they looked closely at the CinemaScore – a modest B + – as an indicator of how strong it would be after its debut on Friday. Well, the DC film raised $ 67 million, at the high end of the initial forecasts (which were 60, max 65 million). That’s in line with Aquaman’s 68 million and more than Shazam’s 53.5 million !, and represents the best debut weekend ever for a The Rock movie. The Rock seems to have been one of the main elements that pushed viewers to the cinema: Black Adam is not a particularly well-known intellectual property, while Johnson confirms himself as one of the now few stars able to drag the audience into the hall.
Worldwide, the film raised $ 140 million, with $ 6.1 million in the UK, 5.3 million in Mexico and 4.9 million in Brazil. Costing about $ 180 million, the film will have to show a good hold in the coming weeks: its main competitor will be Black Panther, in mid-November. However, it seems rather obvious that cinecomic can exceed $ 400 million worldwide (remember that China does not yet have a release date).
In second place opens Ticket to Paradise: again, it seems that the stars have brought people to the cinema. The film with Julia Roberts and George Clooney collects in fact 16.3 million dollars, a result higher than expected. Worldwide, the film reached nearly $ 97 million, with nearly $ 10 million grossing in both Australia and Germany and the UK. The CinemaScore A- reflects likely very positive word of mouth.
As predicted, Smile has lost only 32% compared to a week ago, grossing another 8.3 million dollars and climbing to 84.3 million dollars in just 24 days (rising to 166 worldwide). It’s a tremendous achievement for Paramount Pictures, which are clearly already thinking about a sequel.
After debuting in first place a week ago, Halloween Ends slips to fourth place for $ 8 million – an 80% drop. It is one of the worst second weekends ever (and the worst ever if you count the films distributed in more than 2500 cinemas). Halloween Kills, a year ago, had lost 71%, a figure already quite high due in large part to the simultaneous launch in streaming. Also in this case, the availability of the film on Peacock played against the box-office, but the so-called “franchise fatigue” and negative word of mouth must also be taken into account. Worldwide, Halloween Ends raised a total of $ 82 million.
Closes the top-five The talent of Mr. Crocodile, with 4.2 million dollars and a total so far of 28.7 million dollars.
The jump to seventh place of horror Terrifier 2 is absolutely noteworthy: this week, theaters have risen to 755, with a collection of 1.9 million dollars and a total of 5.2 million dollars: a real success for Cinedigm Entertainment Group, which hit the spot with a horror movie that cost only $ 250,000.
