It’s been over a decade since Tom starred as 1931 mob enforcer Michael Sullivan in Sam Mendes’ critically-acclaimed crime drama, which went on to amass $183.4M off an $80M budget.

‘You have me – “Don Moustache” with a hat on – in it,’ Hanks joked of his facial hair.

‘But you also have two guys who turned out to be two of the biggest motion picture presences in the history of the industry with Jude Law and [Daniel] Craig. And [my character] killed both of [their characters]!’

The A Man Called Otto producer-star didn’t receive any nominations for the role, but the late Paul Newman received Oscar and Golden Globe nods for playing John Rooney and the late Conrad L. Hall won a posthumous Oscar for best cinematography.

Tom explained: 'It's all about logic for me, and the logic of [my character] Michael Sullivan, I think, is impeccable. The logic of everything he does and how he says it and how he experiences things and sees them for the first time, that's high country as far as I'm concerned'

It was Steven Spielberg who originally sent Hanks a copy of Max Allan Collins’ 1998 graphic novel while he was filming Castaway, and he agreed to play the role after reading David Self’s script.

‘If somebody else chooses the movies, it would just be the hits, you know, the ones that play every Christmas,’ Tom said.

‘There’s a number of things that I would say that I got to go back to and delve deep in the the realm of what I thought was presence and authenticity that was very, very particular to those specific characters in those specific movies…I would say Road to Perdition would be one of those where I would just have to say, “Please look at the quiet here.”‘
