In France, the climate transition is hampered by the sales methods of large retailers. This is confirmed by the new report from the Réseau Action Climat (RAC), unveiled on Thursday 2 February. The RAC rated the eight main supermarket chains in France to assess access to sustainable food and the fight against global warming. And it turns out that no distributor has the average.

Carrefour and Monoprix the least badly rated
The evaluation of the association “is based on a grid of around forty indicators divided into three main categories”, specifies the report. How transparent is the sign? The Carrefour brand obtains the lowest score (9/20), followed by Monoprix (8.3/20), Casino (7.5/20), Lidl (7.4/20), System U (7/20 ). Auchan and Intermarché obtain the same score (6.9/20) and Leclerc is the worst student (5.8/20). These mediocre ratings are proof, according to the Climate Action Network, that mass distribution “is not a driving force for the food transition” despite representing 70% of food purchases in France. Meat – the production of which accounts for two-thirds of greenhouse gases – in particular industrial meat remains the heart of their model, while its consumption should drop significantly.

“There has not yet been a transition, a transformation of the offer offered by large retailers, or even a start in the direction of offering fewer products of animal origin, in particular less meat”, regrets Benoit Garnier, RAC food manager.

“We do not yet have this turn towards the proposal of a more vegetable diet with more products that are rich in vegetable proteins such as pulses, such as whole cereals, etc.”

The Climate Action Network also deplores the absence of “Eco-Score” or “Planet-Score” on the shelves, two indicators evaluating the environmental impact of food products on the same model as Nutri-Score, the system of nutritional labeling. The RAC requires more supervision and investment from the public authorities who are considered to be behind on this subject.

This report is also a way of confronting large retailers with their promises when they claim to want to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by offering more sustainable food. It is also the evaluation of a production model that has long since shown its limits when it is necessary to significantly accelerate the reduction of emissions.

To denounce the situation, several NGOs took the South African government to court, which they won. But in addition to exports, South Africa is dependent on coal for its consumption. It provides almost 90% of the country’s electricity.
