The Last Oricru Review 2022 – The Final Verdict

Written by on October 22, 2022

FromSoftware’s Souls games are still very popular and as a result, you see more and more clones appearing on the market. Because so many titles are released in this genre, it is very difficult to be distinctive. With each new game of their own, FromSoftware raises the bar for other ‘Soulslikes’. This makes it seem like an almost impossible task to get involved in this violence, especially if it concerns your first game. GoldKnights is taking on this challenge with The Last Oricru.

Unfamiliar Territory

In The Last Oricru you wake up in a totally unfamiliar environment. You have no idea how you got there and you don’t know who you are or what your name is. Your rescuers want you to be trained to fight for them because you are immortal. You eventually agree to this and end up in a war between different populations living in a medieval era, where futuristic technologies are used. This is the beginning of an adventure in which you not only try to find out which group is good and bad, but you also try to figure out what exactly happened to you and why you no longer know who you are.

No Competitor

When you start playing the action RPG, you immediately see that this title can’t compete graphically with the games from FromSoftware. This is because there is soon a cut scene in which characters talk to each other. These figures lack facial animations, so you only see the mouth move. You could get away with this three generations ago, but today it looks very amateurish. Fortunately, the rest of the bodies of the characters in the game look a lot better and you get the idea that you are playing a modern game. The environments also evoke a few mixed feelings. The Last Oricru sometimes manages to present pretty nice pictures, but now and then there are also some parts of levels that look a bit simple.

This volatility is also reflected in the combat. This part can be called reasonable in itself, but it certainly cannot compete with the well-known titles in the genre. The main character reacts a bit too stiff for that. You have to get used to this and then you can have a good time-fighting. Only a few things throw a spanner in the works. There is a ‘lock-on’ function, which allows you to focus on one enemy. You can also switch to other opponents, but this often doesn’t react the way you want or not at all. What also does not help is that the level design is regularly not well adjusted to the gameplay. You often end up in extremely narrow spaces, which makes parrying attacks from your enemies very difficult. If there are several enemies in this room and you use the lock-on function and you want to switch between the enemies, then it’s a party. Then the camera gets confused and you have no idea who is where and who is hitting whom, resulting in certain death.

The Famous Recipe

As befits a Soulslike, you lose all your accumulated experience points when you die. You can get it again by going to the same point and picking it up again. The Last Oricru also follows all the other parts that the genre entails. That means no map of the environment, so you have to remember how the levels are put together. To get through a level faster, unlock doors or make ladders usable that serve as shortcuts. You can level up your character in six categories and that not only makes you stronger, you can also use stronger weapons and magic. Besides a life meter, you also have a meter for your stamina. It deflates when you attack, run or defend. So you have to fight in a dosed way so as not to get exhausted, which can make you a defenseless target for your enemies. This approach isn’t new for a long time, but it still makes for challenging gameplay.

The same challenging gameplay is for some gamers a reason not to play Soulslikes. They label this genre as too difficult. The Last Oricru has a solution for that: a lower difficulty level. You can play the game in ‘Story Difficulty’. With this difficulty, your enemies will move a lot slower, allowing you to better anticipate their attacks. Not only is this a unique feature for a Soulslike, it immediately makes the game a lot more accessible than other titles in the genre. This isn’t the only original aspect of The Last Oricru. You will also have to make many choices during your adventure that can actually influence the story, including choosing which side you stand on in the war. Because of this, there are multiple endings that invite you to play the game several times.

There is Still a Lot To Improve

Another positive aspect is the frame rate. The Last Oricru runs at a stable 60 frames per second at a resolution of 1440p. Only you often see that the image jumps for a while. This is due to the very regular automatic saving. It’s fine that your progression is saved constantly because that prevents you from being moved back too far when you exit the game and start it up again. Only the image jumps and that is a very annoying side effect. This can of course be solved with a patch, but that is of no use now. However, this is not the only flaw of The Last Oricru that needs to be fixed. Something often goes wrong in the game.

Among other things, we encountered that enemies decided not to attack anymore, making it seem as if we had used a ‘cheat code’. To fix this we had to restart the game. Several times our stamina also stayed full, allowing us to keep attacking without getting tired. There are also graphical glitches and bugs, including that the fire of torches is shown as different squares. It can also happen that text is not spoken or that characters float in the air. Also, the text of the missions that are open and completed, gets smaller and smaller as the list gets longer. At some point it just becomes unreadable. You will encounter errors like this throughout the game. A number of them are already known to the developer, but as yet they have not been solved.

Co-op is Great

What most likely won’t be improved with a patch is the attempt at humor. The main character thinks he is the best at home and often throws out a ‘nice’ pun or comment during dialogues. Only they are so bland that they are simply not funny. Fortunately, all the other characters do not have the urge to play the joke and that fits much more with the story. You can also play this story in local or online co-op, where the second player is a hologram. This makes the game a bit more fun because you can not only work together but there are also special ‘spells’ that can only be used with two players.

Played on: Playstation 5.
Also available on: Xbox Series X|S and PC.

Conclusion

The Last Oricru manages to include a number of unique features for the genre, in all other areas it falls in the middle bracket. The well-known gameplay loop of Soulslike titles is present and the fighting itself is quite reasonable. However, the level design sometimes leaves something to be desired and the lock-on system does not work as it should. Graphically it is also hit and miss, where especially the lack of facial animations looks amateurish. There are also many errors, bugs, and glitches that are still in the game. It is commendable that the frame rate is stable and the co-op is a nice addition. The Last Oricru is accessible to gamers who find Soulslike games too difficult and the game is playable multiple times because there are multiple endings. The only question is whether you want to do that.

Pros:

  • Low difficulty makes the game more accessible
  • The high degree of replayability
  • Co-op is a nice addition
  • Smooth frame rate…

Cons:

  • Lack of facial animations
  • Lots of bugs
  • Regularly bad-level design
  • The attempt at humor fails
