This article contains spoilers for The Flash Season 9 Episode 13, “A New World Part 4.”
As The Flash premieres its final episode, fans of the long-running series came together to mourn the series even though the conclusion left some wanting.
Following the finale’s premiere on The CW, audiences flocked to social media to share their thoughts on the episode. While many expressed their love of the ending, which saw Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) embark on one last happy run after sharing his powers with three new characters, others were disappointed. Several insist the story was rushed to a close and failed to deliver on the catharsis of The Flash settling down. Regardless of their feelings towards the episode, fans also lamented the ending of the Arrowverse as a whole with many sharing their favorite moments and characters.
The Flash‘s final episode brings The CW’s iconic DC television franchise to a close after more than ten years on the air. Beginning life in 2012 with Arrow, the shared universe ultimately grew to encompass several series and spinoffs that often came together for major crossover events. Legends of Tomorrow, Batwoman, Black Lightning and Supergirl all developed dedicated followings of their own but were ultimately all canceled years before The Flash ended. Some argue that the Arrowverse lives on in the form of Superman & Lois, a series that features characters that have appeared in the franchise’s crossovers, but this show technically takes place on a different Earth.
Gustin Addresses The Flash’s End
Gustin has been open about his mixed emotions regarding The Flash‘s conclusion. Having played the role for just shy of a decade, the actor noted that he’s grown especially fond of Barry Allen. “I knew I was going to keep one thing, but I didn’t know that it was going to be the ring,” he said. “Right as we were finishing, I was like, ‘This is going to stay in my pocket.'” Despite his adoration for the role, he noted that concluding the show before Season 10 felt like a necessary move.
“A lot of people wanted us to get to 10 seasons, but in my mind, we did 10 years — it was 2013 when I was cast as Barry Allen, and we finished in 2023,” Gustin said. “We had done everything we needed to do, the characters were in a good place, and we had reached the conclusion.” While he may be done with the Scarlet Speedster, the actor has said that were there an opportunity to play another superhero, he’d happily take up the mantle.
