RIVERSIDE, CA — A reported house fire Friday in Riverside turned into a homicide investigation after three people were found dead at the residence, and a suspect possibly connected to the slayings was shot and killed hours later by San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputies.

The lethal force was used in Needles, more than 200 miles away from the Riverside crime scene. It was not clear how the suspect was tracked down; his identity was not released.

Gloria Huerta, public information officer for the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, said a possible tie between the suspect and the Riverside killings was still under investigation.

“Our deputies were involved in a lethal force encounter this afternoon in Needles,” she said late Friday night. “I don’t have many details as the investigation is still very active.”

The suspect did not survive the deputy-involved shooting, Huerta confirmed.

Riverside police Officer Ryan Railsback said late Friday there were no outstanding suspects in the Riverside killings.

A female who was with the suspect was safe and was being interviewed Friday night by investigators at a San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department station, according to Railsback.

“It’s not clear whether she is a victim, a witness or a suspect” in the Riverside incident, Railsback said of the multi-agency investigation.

The female’s age was not being released, Railsback said.

Friday’s events unfolded between 10:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. when a call for service was received by police about a possible disturbance between a male and female at a residence in the 11000 block of Price Court. Shortly after, more calls came in about a fire at the home, Railsback said.
