Star Wars’ Mark Hamill Defends Luke’s Force-Kick in Return of the Jedi

Written by on May 28, 2023

Star Wars veteran Mark Hamill addresses Luke Skywalker’s famous “Force kick” from a fight sequence in 1983’s Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi.

After a Star Wars fan on Twitter asked if it bothers anyone, Hamill defended Luke’s “widely celebrated, perfectly executed” Force kick during Return of the Jedi’s Battle of the Great Pit of Carkoon. The fight sequence in question features Luke kicking one of Jabba the Hutt’s soldiers into a sarlacc pit without making any physical contact. The Force kick was actually a choreography mistake that turned into a joke among fans, who credited Luke’s Force abilities to give sense to the legendary blooper.

Why Mark Hamill Is Both a Star Wars and DC Icon

Hamill first appeared as Luke Skywalker in Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope (1977), which served as his feature acting debut. His leading performance as the fan-favorite Jedi in George Lucas’ original Star Wars trilogy cemented Hamill’s status as a pop culture icon. More than three decades after Return of the Jedi’s release, Hamill made his way back to the Star Wars universe to reprise Luke in Lucasfilm’s Star Wars sequel trilogy, along with original co-stars Harrison Ford and the late Carrie Fisher.

Apart from Star Wars, Hamill also found success in voice acting in part to his notable performances as DC villain The Joker in numerous Batman projects. In a previous interview, Hamill confirmed that he’s not interested in playing the Joker again following the death of long-time Batman voice actor Kevin Conroy in 2022. “We were like partners,” Hamill said of Conroy. “We were like Laurel and Hardy. Without Kevin there, there doesn’t seem to be a Batman for me.”

Mark Hamill’s Continued Presence in the Star Wars Franchise, Explained

While he may be done voicing the Joker, Hamill has continued working with Lucasfilm in projects beyond the Star Wars sequel trilogy. He surprised fans when Luke Skywalker made a guest-star appearance in The Mandalorian‘s Season 2 finale, and then again in The Book of Boba Fett. Both of the Disney+ Star Wars shows used de-aging VFX technology and a stunt double to recreate young Luke Skywalker. Additionally, Hamill also participated in promotions for the Star Wars Jedi: Survivor video game, which featured Hamill mentoring star Cameron Monaghan in the ways of the Force.

Hamill recently commented on the possibility of Lucasfilm producing a Luke Skywalker-centered series, admitting that the studio should just “get an age-appropriate actor” instead of going through the “unusual” and expensive process of using CGI or body doubles. Should Lucasfilm indeed recast Luke, Marvel star Sebastian Stan has long been fan-cast for the role over his striking resemblance to Hamill. Hamill himself has even acknowledged this, referring to Stan as his “son” in a 2018 tweet.

Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi and Hamill’s other Star Wars performances are now streaming on Disney+.
