Ryan Reynolds Prevented From Improvising in Deadpool 3

Written by on May 27, 2023

Marvel Studios’ long-awaited Deadpool 3 has commenced filming amidst the ongoing Writers Guild of America strikes. Those strikes have already impacted the upcoming film, by preventing star Ryan Reynolds from using all of his acting talents.

According to Collider, due to the contract Reynolds has with the studio, he is legally unable to improvise any lines for the production as long as the WGA strikes continue. What this means is that the actor will be completely limited the words provided by the script currently available.

The ongoing Writers Guild of America strikes began on May 2 after talks with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers failed to result in an agreement. The WGA has been calling for better working environments, payment schemes for writers, as well as regulations to safeguard against studios’ use of artificial intelligence in the generation of content and materials.

It was actors Stefan Kapičić and Hugh Jackman who appeared to confirm that filming for Deadpool 3 had begun. On social media, Jackman shared an image of his current look, fully prepared to return as Wolverine. It should be noted that at the current time, no official announcements have been made by Marvel Studios.

Deadpool 3 marks the only franchise continuation from Fox’s X-Men saga, bringing the Merc With a Mouth to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Joining him are Kapičić as Colossus, Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Morena Baccarin as Vanessa, Karan Soni as Dopinder and, of course, Jackman as Logan, who is set to finally meet Deadpool.

Reynolds previously discussed his numerous attempts to persuade Jackman to return as Wolverine, despite the actor seemingly retiring from the role with 2017’s Logan. According to the Deadpool star, part of the pitch to Disney for the threequel involved Wolverine. Regarding his decision to reprise his iconic role, Jackman explained, “I think it was a big shock to him. There was a massive pause, and then he said, ‘I can’t believe the timing of this.'”

In addition, actor Patrick Stewart, who has already reprised the role of Professor Charles Xavier for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, previously suggested that he may appear in Deadpool 3. While nothing has yet been confirmed, Stewart stated earlier this year, “I’ve been told to standby… I know nothing more than that, honest.” No further comments have been made regarding Xavier’s potential return.

Deadpool 3 opens in theaters on Nov. 8, 2024.
