Diamond Sports Group, the parent company of Padres TV partner Bally Sports, was in the middle of a 20 year, $1.2 billion contract with the Padres to air their games on TV through the year 2032. On Tuesday, Diamond elected to allow their grace period to expire after missing a rights fee payment last week, thus forfeiting their broadcast rights following Tuesday’s game. The broadcast rights went back to the Padres, who announced a new deal that will allow fans to watch the games on TV or stream them digitally. Beginning on May 31st, fans will be able to watch games on the following TV channels:

As part of this agreement, MLB is offering a new direct-to-consumer streaming subscription for $19.99 per month or $74.99 for the rest of the season by registering at MLB.TV. Padres games played through Sunday, June 4th will be available for free with MLB login at Padres.com and in the MLB apps on mobile and connected devices. The Padres’ primary TV broadcasters Don Orsillo, Mark Grant and Bob Scanlan will remain in their existing roles.

“We have been preparing for this groundbreaking moment,” said Padres CEO Erik Greupner. “The Padres are excited to be the first team to partner with Major League Baseball to offer a direct-to-consumer streaming option through MLB.TV without blackouts while preserving our in-market distribution through traditional cable and satellite television providers. Our fans will now have unprecedented access to Padres games through both digital and traditional platforms throughout San Diego and beyond.”
