Notre Dame might not go to the Big Ten. If you ask me, I think the Irish will remain independent and will simply leverage their next TV deal to retain exclusivity and not share revenue with anyone else.
However, let’s say Notre Dame does go to the Big Ten. Let’s say the Irish find the prospect of playing in the Big Ten — not just playing against Big Ten teams — so attractive that they take the plunge. What then?
One question which has come up is whether USC would make more money. After all, Notre Dame would represent another mouth the Big Ten has to feed. USC would split revenue with yet another Big Ten member. Notre Dame is not going to get shortchanged in its cut of the pie.
However, USC would not lose revenue if Notre Dame entered the neighborhood. Far from it. The Trojans would get an even bigger financial windfall.
Worry less about the number of slices a conference has to distribute from its revenue pot. Worry more about the size of each slice.
