necessary to double the surface of green spaces to reduce mortality

Written by on February 2, 2023

A third of summer heat-related deaths could be avoided if more trees were planted. It is a major modeling work, carried out in 93 European cities, based on temperatures and mortality in the summer of 2015, which makes it possible to reach this conclusion.

More than 2,600 premature deaths (out of the 6,700 that occurred that summer due to the heat) could have been avoided in Europe if there had been more vegetation cover in the city. It is a large study published in the medical journal Lancet which affirms it. It would be necessary to double the surface of green spaces to reduce mortality.

Why looking at the stars or a rainbow is good for the brain

Today, according to the calculations of this team from the Barcelona Institute of Global Health, the vegetation cover of cities is on average 15%. By doubling it and reaching 30% of wooded area, the temperature in the city would drop by 0.4°C on average in summer and there would be fewer urban heat islands which are very concrete or tarmacked areas in which temperatures remain high (especially at night).

These other benefits of trees

You should know that in summer, 75% of the urban population lives with 1°C more than the inhabitants of the surrounding countryside and that 20% of city dwellers face even 2°C more than their neighbors on the outskirts. This additional heat prematurely tires the organisms and promotes cardio-respiratory problems. This is a growing concern with climate change, remember that last year Europe experienced the hottest summer on record.

To reduce heat islands and it’s not just the trees that matter. It would also be necessary to innovate in construction materials… lighten the color of roads or roofs, promote natural ventilation, by playing on the air circulation corridors. “But we also encourage urban planners to integrate this objective of a third of plant surface in the city”, call the authors of this study. “Because trees have other benefits than mitigating the heat. They are also associated with a reduction in pollution and cardiovascular diseases. An improvement in the mental health of the inhabitants”, conclude the authors of this study.

MEPs want a debate to be opened on the war in Ukraine. “France must help Ukraine” but on the international scene, “our country gives the feeling of being in tow”, estimated Tuesday January 31 Olivier Marleix (LR), at the National Assembly. He spoke of an “isolation of the President of the Republic even in his own country”. Mathilde Panot (LFI) also called for “a debate on the role that France should play”. These requests were made on the occasion of the visit to France of the President of the Ukrainian Parliament (the Rada) Rouslan Stefantchouk, who was present at the start of the current affairs session in the Assembly. This live is now over.

Joe Biden will discuss the weapons requested by kyiv with the Ukrainian president. “We are going to talk,” replied the American president to journalists who questioned him about the demands of Volodymyr Zelensky, Tuesday, January 31, at the White House. The Ukrainian head of state calls in particular for combat planes and long-range missiles.

France will supply 12 additional Caesar guns to kyiv. These 12 medium-range guns will be “financed as part of the support fund of 200 million euros” set up by France, said Minister of the Armed Forces Sébastien Lecornu during a press conference with his Ukrainian counterpart, Oleksii Reznikov. This delivery is in addition to the 18 Caesar guns already supplied by Paris to the Ukrainian army since the start of the conflict.

kyiv will receive new Western heavy tanks. “Between 120 and 140” tanks will be delivered to Ukraine, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kouleba announced on Tuesday. Westerners recently gave the green light to such deliveries after long procrastination. The tank models will be German-designed Leopard 2s, British Challenger 2s and American Abrams.

Moscow claims the capture of a new village north of Bakhmout. The Russian Ministry of Defense assures that “the locality of Blagodatné was liberated” after an offensive by “volunteer assault units” supported by aviation and artillery. In this city in eastern Ukraine, the Russian army has intensified its offensive and has been making slow progress for several weeks.
