Marvel Makes a Major Change to Iron Man’s Place in the MCU Timeline

Written by on May 30, 2023

Marvel Studios has seemingly retconned when Tony Stark became Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

According to sample pages from Marvel Studios The Marvel Cinematic Universe: An Official Timeline, the events of Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk have been pushed farther apart and are no longer set just six months from one another. The upcoming Marvel Studios-approved encyclopedia, which promises to “answer the biggest questions: what happened, when, where, and why,” has Iron Man set in Spring 2008 with The Incredible Hulk taking place two years later in 2010.

Marvel Studios previously revealed in Fury’s Big Week, a comic book tie-in released ahead of Marvel’s The Avengers (2012), that the events depicted in the Phase 1 films Iron Man 2 (2010), The Incredible Hulk (2008) and Thor (2011) largely took place at the same time. Furthermore, Iron Man 2 mentioned that Stark has only been Iron Man for about six months, meaning that the events of Iron Man could not have happened in Spring 2008. At this time, until Marvel Studios officially addresses the timeline change in the encyclopedia book, it is unknown whether placing the events of Iron Man back in 2008 is an official retcon or an oversight by the publisher/writers.

Iron Man was the first superhero introduced in the MCU, with Robert Downey Jr. portraying the genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist in 10 films from 2008 to 2019. Downey officially stepped away from the role of Tony Stark/Iron Man in Avengers: Endgame, which saw the beloved character sacrifice himself to save the universe. Since leaving the MCU, Downey has played the title character in the 2020 fantasy adventure film Dolittle and has a supporting role in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming biographical feature Oppenheimer.

The MCU Timeline Book Also Reveals When She-Hulk Is Set

While Iron Man‘s placement on the MCU timeline is up for debate, Marvel Studios The Marvel Cinematic Universe: An Official Timeline has confirmed when the 2022 Disney+ series She-Hulk: Attorney at Law is set. On the sample page detailing Bruce Banner/The Hulk’s MCU timeline journey, it is stated that his appearances on She-Hulk took place in 2024 and 2025. The 2024 timeframe is likely when Bruce taught his cousin Jennifer Walters how to harness and hone her newfound powers, meaning the majority of the Disney+ series takes place in 2025. This lines up with where She-Hulk is placed on the “Marvel Cinematic Universe in Timeline Order” section on Disney+, between Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Ms. Marvel, which were both confirmed to take place in 2025.
