Marvel Announces the Return of Superior Spider-Man

The Superior Spider-Man is returning to the Marvel Universe.
On Twitter, the official Spider-Man account shared a promo that reads, “The Superior Spider-Man will return.” The post revealed that The Superior Spider-Man writer Dan Slott will tell a new story for the titular hero in Fall 2023. “This fall, [Dan Slott] will return to the smarter, stronger, and superior wall-crawler in [Superior Spider-Man],” the account tweeted, adding, “More info swinging in soon.”
Marvel’s Superior Spider-Man, Explained
Marvel’s original Superior Spider-Man series written by Slott ran for over 30 issues between Jan. 2013 and Sep. 2014. The title starred Doctor Octopus/Otto Octavius, who had swapped his mind with Spider-Man Peter Parker before the villain’s own body died. Now running around in Peter’s superpowered body, Otto decided to become a “superior” version of the heroic web-slinger. Marvel previously put out one other Superior Spider-Man solo title by writer Christos Gage and artist Mike Hawkthorne, which spun out of the Spider-Geddon event and ran for 12 issues between Dec. 2018 and Oct. 2019.
The announcement that Superior Spider-Man will be back comes during the opening weekend for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse in theaters. In the months leading up to the movie, Marvel put out miniseries and ongoing series spotlighting heroes who appear in Across the Spider-Verse, such as Spider-Man/Miles Morales, Spider-Man 2099/Miguel O’Hara, Spider-Gwen/Gwen Stacy and Spider-Punk/Hobie Brown. Marvel’s next Superior Spider-Man title will be out prior to the sequel Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, which releases in theaters March 29, 2024. While Across the Spider-Verse co-writers and producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller have said that some Spider-People were saved for Beyond the Spider-Verse, it hasn’t been revealed whether Superior Spider-Man is one of them as of writing.
Spider-Boy Debuts Before Superior Spider-Man’s Return
In the meantime, Slott has been writing a new Spider-Man series that launched with a Spider-Verse arc in Oct. 2022. The end of this arc introduced fans to Peter Parker’s sidekick, Spider-Boy, in Spider-Man #7. While discussing Spider-Man‘s second, Electro-focused arc with CBR, Slott said, “I think the more time fans give Spider-Boy, the more they’ll see how fun he is as his own character and how messed up he is.” The writer said fans should put June’s Edge of Spider-Verse #3 on their pull list, being that it will show who Spider-Boy is under the mask.
