Tim Burton said at a press conference over the weekend that he would no longer work with Disney. The successful filmmaker is also not enthusiastic about the Marvel franchise.

Classic action blockbuster cinema is not his world: Tim Burton is not interested in working with Marvel. As the director revealed on Saturday at the Lumière Festival in Lyon, France, he does not plan to participate in the so-called Marvel Cinematic Universe – MCU for short.

“I can only handle one universe, I can’t handle a multi-universe,” he explained. When asked if he would ever direct a Marvel film, the 64-year-old said no. In his view, Disney is increasingly standardizing its offering. “There’s little room for other things,” Burton lamented, given the fact that Disney has focused primarily on Marvel, “Star Wars” and Pixar productions in recent years.

“I think my days at Disney are numbered”
The “Beetlejuice” creators last worked with the mouse company in 2019 when he directed the live-action adaptation of “Dumbo”. The film was “quite autobiographical on a certain level,” Burton said. “‘Dumbo’ is why I think my days at Disney are over. I realized that I was Dumbo, that I was in this horrible big circus was working and that I had to break out.”

In fact, Burton has given Disney one of the highest-grossing films of all time in the past: “Alice in Wonderland” earned the company a whopping $1.02 billion in 2010. The sequel, also produced by Burton but directed by James Bobin, ‘Alice in Wonderland: Through the Looking-Glass’ (2016) flopped.
