WikiLeaks: UK confirms extradition to US of Julian Assange, who will appeal
WikiLeaks denounces “a dark day for freedom of the press and for British democracy”.

One more step towards extradition, but not yet the end of the judicial soap opera. The British government confirmed on Friday June 17 that it had signed the decree for the extradition of Julian Assange to the United States. The founder of WikiLeaks, detained for three years in the high security prison of Belmarsh, has been prosecuted for a long time across the Atlantic for a massive leak of confidential documents.

“Under the Extradition Act 2003, the Minister of State [Priti Patel] must sign an extradition order if there are no grounds for barring the order, the Ministry of State said. In this case, the British courts did not find that it would be oppressive, unjust or an abuse of process to extradite Mr. Assange, nor did they find that extradition would be incompatible with its human rights, including his right to a fair trial and freedom of expression, and that while in the United States he will be treated appropriately, including with respect to his health.”

He faces up to 175 years in prison in the United States.
WikiLeaks immediately denounced “a dark day for freedom of the press and for British democracy”. The organization assured that “the decision will be appealed”. The 50-year-old Australian can indeed use this remedy within 14 days.

Julian Assange is claimed by American justice, which wants to judge him for the dissemination, from 2010, of more than 700,000 classified documents on American military and diplomatic activities, in particular in Iraq and Afghanistan. He faces 175 years in prison. He was arrested in the UK in 2019 after spending more than seven years as a refugee in the Ecuadorian embassy in London.

The trial of a vast traffic in horse meat opened on Tuesday, June 7, in Marseille. 18 defendants are on the benches. Among the complainants, horse owners who thought they were sending their old animal to end its life in a field and not on a butcher’s stall.

They are horse dealers, veterinarians and wholesalers: 18 defendants are tried, Tuesday, June 7 in Marseille (Bouches-du-Rhône) for having participated in a vast traffic in horse meat. Leisure horses were taken to the slaughterhouse to resell their meat, which was unfit for human consumption. The animals were entrusted by their owners to professionals, who promised a peaceful retirement to their animal. “I had entrusted him because I had no more work at that time. He said to me: “No problem, you will come to see him when you want”, remembers Aline Oudin, civil party.

Traffic through Belgium
Without his consent, the man sold his horse. “He said to me, ‘Yes, indeed I remember, it was part of a batch of four, and yours was very plump'”, she continues. The animal was not edible, for sanitary reasons. The horses, recovered free or at low cost, were taken to Belgium, to one of the largest European merchants. The identity of the animals was falsified there, to make the sale of the meat possible. The animals were then sent back to French slaughterhouses, where some veterinarians would have turned a blind eye. In three years, 4,000 unfit horses would have entered the food market.
