Hurts has 3 TD passes plus TD run, Eagles beat Titans 35-10

Jalen Hurts strengthened his MVP bid by throwing for 380 yards and three touchdowns and running for another score, and A.J Brown caught two touchdown passes against his former team to lead the Philadelphia Eagles to a 35-10 win over the Tennessee Titans on Sunday.
Hurts has led the Eagles to an 11-1 start, their first time with that record since 2004 and the fourth time in franchise history. The 1949 Eagles won the NFL championship. The 1980 and 2004 teams lost in the Super Bowl.
The Eagles look every bit like a team that can win the Super Bowl.
Hurts was all they really needed to inch closer to a playoff spot.
The speedy, sure-armed QB set a career high with 29 total touchdowns and had his third career game with four total TDs. His first half alone was a pretty good game for most quarterbacks: 268 yards passing and two touchdowns with one rushing score.
The Eagles’ defense was first-rate, too, bottling up Derrick Henry — who had 11 carries for 30 yards — and limiting Ryan Tannehill to 141 yards passing and a touchdown. The Titans (7-5) lost their second straight but still have a comfortable lead in the AFC South.
After a field goal got Tennessee within 14-10 late in the second quarter, the Titans punted on five straight possessions before turning it over on downs.
It was inevitable that Hurts would look for Brown. Tennessee drafted Brown in the second round of the 2019 draft and he instantly became one of the top receivers in the game. He topped 1,000 yards receiving each of his first two seasons and had 869 in just 13 games in his third. But the Titans balked when Brown wanted a raise that would make him among the highest-paid receivers in the league and sent him to Philadelphia in a draft-night deal.
That trade was Philly’s first real win of the season.
Brown has been better than advertised — and yes, the Eagles paid him a guaranteed $57 million — and he had eight catches for 119 yards against the Titans. Fellow wideout DeVonta Smith had five catches for 102 yards.
With the game tied 7-all, Hurts and Brown connected on an apparent 40-yard TD pass that overturned because of a penalty. Brown had already hugged the goal post as part of his scoring celebration. No worries. Hurts came right back and hit Brown — who bowled over cornerback Kristian Fulton — for, yup, a 40-yard touchdown and a 14-7 lead.
Hurts threw a 34-yard TD pass to Smith on the game’s first drive and closed the first half with a 2-yard run for a 21-10 lead.
The next Hurts-to-Brown TD was a doozy. Hurts aired it out to the corner of the end zone and the ball skimmed cornerback Tre Avery’s facemask before Brown cradled it for the 29-yard score and a 28-10 lead in the third.
Miles Sanders’ 3-yard TD run in the fourth made it 35-10 and the only suspense left was if Hurts would return for another drive. He didn’t. The game was out of reach. The best season in team history remains very much in sight.
COSTLY TD
The lone Titans touchdown came with at significant cost. Receiver Treylon Burks was evaluated for a concussion following a vicious helmet-to-helmet hit as he jumped to make the 25-yard TD catch from Tannehill in the first quarter that tied the game 7-all.
Eagles safety Marcus Epps was flagged for unnecessary roughness. Burks was on his back and players from both teams took a knee. The 22-year-old receiver eventually walked off on his own power and went to the locker room for treatment.
INJURIES
Titans: Burks, Fulton (groin) and LB David Long all suffered injuries.
Eagles: WR Quez Watkins (shoulder) and LB Shaun Bradley (hamstring) were hurt.
FLAG FOOTBALL
The Eagles were penalized nine times for 60 yards in the first half and the Titans were hit with four penalties for 59 yards.

Eagles overreactions: An important lesson from huge win
The Eagles flexed their muscles at home on Sunday on both sides of the ball, dropping bombs from the sky and smothering the Titans’ offense in one of their most impressive wins of the season.
A slow, penalty-bogged first half finally gave way to some enjoyable football from Jalen Hurts, who was once again brilliant and now has 29 total touchdowns in 12 games. The defense came prepared for Derrick Henry and shut him down from the jump.
It was a total bludgeoning, so let’s overreact as the Eagles reach 11-1 for the fourth time in franchise history:
- Howie Roseman should win Executive of the Year
Howie Roseman once had an up-and-down relationship with Eagles fans. Right now it’s nothing but up.
Roseman evaluated his roster after the loss to the Bucs last postseason, decided Jalen Hurts was good enough to go for it right now, and went to work putting numbers on the board.
He signed Haason Reddick, who has been fantastic. He added James Bradberry late in the summer, and Bradberry has rewarded him by playing at a CB1 level all year. And he executed two tremendous trades, turning a first-round pick, a third-round pick, and a few late-round picks into C.J. Gardner-Johnson and A.J. Brown.
Brown has been one of the best receivers in football all season, and his revenge game against his former team was the latest and most emphatic reminder of how brilliant that trade was.
Brown cooked the Titans all afternoon in South Philly, making ludicrous catches like this one, his second touchdown of the day:
Brown finished Sunday’s game with eight catches for 119 yards and two touchdowns. He now has 61 catches for 950 yards and nine touchdowns on the season. He’s one of the best wideouts in the world.
Adding Brown to the team was such a dramatic and immediate upgrade that he basically unlocked the entire team. It was a gutsy move from Roseman, and he absolutely nailed it.

If the Eagles had drafted a wide receiver we likely would’ve seen a bit of a leap from Hurts, because he clearly put the work in this offseason. But adding a player like Brown was the perfect way to find out exactly what you had at quarterback and expedite the franchise’s next few years. Roseman couldn’t have made a better decision: invest in talent around Hurts, figure out if you have a QB, and if it really works you suddenly have a young QB on a cheap deal while you make a Super Bowl run with talent all around him.
The Eagles will extend Hurts this offseason with a big-money deal, and then Roseman will have to keep earning his keep with moves on the margins. It’s a different game.
But his current hot streak should have Eagles fans feeling confident that he’ll be able to sustain this success.
- The Eagles are their own biggest threat
The Eagles committed 12 penalties on Sunday, squeezing in some truly ugly football around another high-scoring win.
I know the Eagles aren’t going to commit five first-half false starts again this season. Sunday’s bizzaro world slop-fest first half was almost certainly a one-off.
But a larger message needs to come out of the shabby football the Eagles played in South Philly: this is the kind of stuff that will lose you a winnable game in the playoffs, and they need to tighten it up before it’s win-or-go-home time.
The Eagles have proven week in and week out that they’re one of the most talented teams in the NFL, top to bottom. They should be able to win any game. But losing your focus and committing penalties is a great way to let a team hang around longer than they should, like the Titans did Sunday. Derrick Henry couldn’t find a free yard, Jalen Hurts was slinging it, and the pass rush was getting home… yet the Eagles weren’t pulling away because they kept stepping on their own feet.
I don’t really buy into football fans who think the Eagles are overrated because of their schedule, but I do think the Eagles need to remember that better teams will capitalize on these mistakes. If you’re playing the 49ers they will feast on a sloppy football team. The Cowboys likely will, too.
Getting bounced in the postseason because you keep making dumb mistakes would really sting when you know how good this Eagles team is and how far it can go. So clean it up now, before it’s too late.
- The past two weeks should terrify the NFL
Last week the Eagles ran for 363 yards en route to 40 points. Jalen Hurts had 17 carries and 157 yards on the ground. It was a tour de force in the run game, spearheaded by the way their dynamic dual-threat QB terrifies opposing defenses.
This week the Eagles ran for just 41 yards in the first three quarters while Hurts threw for 380 yards, completely dicing up the Titans’ secondary and dropping dimes to elite wide receivers and backup tight ends alike.
There’s nothing scarier than Patrick Mahomes, who seems unstoppable and who can score in a million ways we haven’t even thought of yet.
But the Eagles have to be approaching Mahomes-level of terror for defensive coordinators, because there simply doesn’t seem to be a way to stop their offense. They really can do it all.
They did something Sunday that hasn’t happened since 1987:
Unreal.
Some talking heads have repeatedly said they still have questions about the Eagles, probably because they haven’t actually watched the games. Hurts wasn’t a great passer last year, and the image of his iffy showing against the Bucs in the postseason is likely seared in their minds.
Hurts is currently an elite passer. He had just a couple bad throws on Sunday. Everything else was absolutely on the money. Even some of his attempts that were marked as incompletions were great throws, like an incredible ball to DeVonta Smith in the third quarter that would’ve been an admittedly tough catch but was absolutely perfectly-placed.
He’s on another level right now. I think he’s the MVP. And he’s only 24 years old.

Eagles WR A.J. Brown on two-TD game vs. Titans: ‘This one meant a lot to me’
A.J. Brown’s young career is well-stocked with big performances, but his latest one against the Tennessee Titans hit different for the 25 year old.
With eight receptions for 119 yards and two touchdowns, Brown was a catalyst in a 35-10 beatdown of the Titans, his former team. The Eagles wide receiver wasn’t shy about his feelings on the matchup following the victory.
“This one meant a lot to me,” Brown said. “Early on, I had mixed emotions about the trade and everything. I’d be lying to you if I said I didn’t circle this game”
Brown was traded by the Titans during the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft, which was the result of a lengthy contract dispute after his first three seasons in Tennessee. The Eagles gave up first- and third-round draft picks in exchange for Brown, who had outplayed his rookie contract by generating 185 catches for 2,995 yards and 24 TDs in his first three years. Philadelphia also handed Brown a four-year, $100 million contract upon his arrival.
“It wasn’t tough for me,” Brown said of keeping his emotions in check for this game. “The past couple weeks, I’ve just been removing myself and kind of like working on myself. Like I’ve told you through the week, I’ve trying to be consistent — that was my focus. It wasn’t about who we were playing. Of course, I wanted to have a good day but I just kept my emotions down all week and just focused on what I needed to focus on. Today, I ran it out and let it all loose.”
Brown prompted the rout with a 40-yard TD catch in the second quarter that broke a 7-7 tie, and spurred on the one-sided affair with a 30-yard TD grab in the end zone to start the second half. Both TD catches exemplified the physical style of play Brown presents for opposing corners, and his presence has helped turn Philadelphia into a top-three offense in points (28.2) and yards (388.3) entering Week 13.
Jalen Hurts’ breakout season has also coincided with Brown’s arrival, and the Eagles quarterback added to his MVP-caliber season on Sunday by passing for 380 yards and three TDs.
“I’m happy he put on a show,” Hurts said. “He’s a really special player.”
Brown added after the game that it’s “all love” for his former Titans coaches and teammates, and relived the emotions he felt for a team and city he wanted to spend his entire career with. But with the sentimental game now out of the way for Brown, the star wideout can focus on getting the Eagles (11-1) back to prominence with a key road game against the division rival Giants (7-4-1) in Week 14.
Titans-Eagles Postgame Notes
· The Titans had nine different offensive players catch at least one pass and five players record at least one rushing attempt. Their 12 total players with at least one scrimmage touch established a season high through 12 games, while the nine pass-catchers tied the team’s season high, which was originally set in the season opener against the New York Giants (Sept. 11).
· Quarterback Ryan Tannehill and tight end Chig Okonkwo connected for a 41-yard completion in the second quarter. It was the Titans’ 11th passing play of 30-plus yards since Week 8 at Houston. Through the early afternoon games of Dec. 4, the Titans’ 11 such plays over the six-week span were the most in the NFL.
· Running back Julius Chestnut became the 76th member of the team to play in a game in 2022. The Titans’ 75 players entering the week were the second most in the league behind only the Arizona Cardinals’ 77 players used.
· With right tackle Nicholas Petit-Frere, cornerback Roger McCreary and wide receiver Treylon Burks all starting the game, the Titans increased their total to 36 rookie starts in 2022. That is the team’s second-highest total through 12 games during its “Titans era” (1999 to present) behind the 42 rookie starts through a dozen games in 2005.
· The 12 penalties enforced against the Eagles were the most by a Titans opponent since the Titans faced a Rams team that was flagged for 12 penalties at Los Angeles on Nov. 7, 2021.
· The Titans defense limited the Eagles to three conversions on 11 third-down attempts, a rate of 27.3 percent. It was the sixth time in 2022 that the defense held an opponent under 30.0 percent on third down.
CB TRE AVERY
· Tied for the team lead and established a career high with seven tackles.
· Led the team with two passes defensed.
WR C.J. BOARD
· Averaged 10.5 yards on four punt returns and 20.7 yards on three kickoff returns. He also caught one pass for six yards and downed a Titans punt at Philadelphia’s four-yard line.

· Recorded a strip-sack against Jalen Hurts on third down in the second quarter, but the ball was recovered by the Eagles. Dupree notched his fourth sack of the season, giving him 46.5 career sacks. It was also his 10th career strip-sack and 10th career forced fumble.

· Started and tallied three tackles, including a sack.
· Sacked Jalen Hurts for a three-yard loss in the second quarter. He improved his 2022 total to three sacks and his career total to 19.5 sacks.
RB DERRICK HENRY
· Rushed for 30 yards on 11 carries and added two receptions for eight yards.
· Finished the game with 9,007 career scrimmage yards, joining Eddie George (12,153), Chris Johnson (9,968) and Earl Campbell (9,292) as the franchise’s only players to reach 9,000 scrimmage yards with the franchise.

· Caught three passes for 22 yards, including a nine-yard grab on third-and-five during a scoring drive in the second quarter.

· Led the team and established career highs through 12 games with four receptions and 68 receiving yards.
· Produced a 41-yard reception in the second quarter. He became the second NFL tight end in 2022 to record his fourth catch of at least 30 yards, joining Kansas City’s Travis Kelce (five). It was Okonkwo’s fourth such play in a five-game span.
· Added two tackles on special teams.
ILB MONTY RICE
· Tied for third on the team with six total tackles, including a tackle for loss. He added a special teams tackle.
P RYAN STONEHOUSE
· Punted seven times for a 57.3-yard gross average and a 42.3-yard net average with one punt placed inside the 20.
· His 57.3-yard gross average established a career high through 12 games and qualified as the fifth-best single-game punting average in franchise history.
· His 57.3-yard gross average ranked second in NFL history by a player with at least seven punts in a game. It was second behind only Houston’s Shane Lechler with a 58.9-yard average on seven punts at Arizona on Nov. 10, 2013.
· Registered his 10th game of the season with a gross average of 50.0 yards or better, which tied Shane Lechler (10 games in 2009), Thomas Morstead (2012), Corey Bojorquez (2020) and A.J. Cole III (2021) for the most in a season in NFL history.
· In the fourth quarter, he pinned the Eagles on their four-yard line with a 61-yard punt.
QB RYAN TANNEHILL
· Completed 14 of 22 passes for 141 yards and a touchdown for a passer rating of 97.0. He added three rushing attempts for a team-high 34 yards.
· Completed a 25-yard touchdown pass to Treylon Burks in the first quarter, capping a drive in which he had a season-long 17-yard rushing attempt and converted a fourth-and-seven with an eight-yard scramble.
· Produced his fourth consecutive game with a passer rating above 90.0.
· Increased his season total to 11 touchdowns (210 career) to only four interceptions.
‘This one meant a lot to me’: Brown leads Eagles past Titans
PHILADELPHIA — A.J. Brown’s touchdown celebration said it all.
After hauling in a 40-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jalen Hurts early in the second quarter in the Eagles’ 35-10 win over the Tennessee Titans, Brown pulled out a towel, ran towards the goal post, wagged his finger at it as if it misbehaved, and then slapped the post with the towel three times before giving it a hug.
The message was directed at his old team.
“Today, I’m going to have to give you this whooping,” he said. “But I still love you, though.”
That touchdown was overturned because Brown didn’t get a second foot in bounds, but he scored on the very next play, and ended with eight catches, 119 yards and two touchdowns. After the second score, he pulled the towel out again.
“This one meant a lot to me. Early on I had mixed emotions about the trade and everything. I’d be lying to you to say I didn’t circle this game,” he said.
Brown was dealt from the Titans to the Eagles on the first night of the draft in April for the Nos. 18 and 101 overall picks. The trade was contingent on a new contract extension — something Brown and the Titans could not come to terms on. Philadelphia signed him to a four-year, $100 million deal that includes $57 million guaranteed that night.
He’s been dynamite for Philadelphia. Through 12 games, he has 61 catches, 950 yards and nine touchdowns.
Leading up to the game, Brown said the matchup wasn’t personal. But he came clean afterwards about how much it meant to him.
“It’s been personal since the trade to be honest. I’ve just been trying to keep it down,” he said. “That’s where I wanted to be and things didn’t work out and it was kind of just, ‘here you go — we don’t want you anymore,’ and you kind of just get pushed to the side. In that situation for me, I had to grow up quick.”
Brown added that he had “to learn it was a business” and that “of course I wanted to make them regret the decision.”
The 7-5 Titans have missed his production. Heading into the game, rookie Treylon Burks was their leader in receiving yards with 369. Burks suffered a concussion against the Eagles Sunday after taking a hit from safety Marcus Epps on a spectacular touchdown catch.
“It’s not about A.J.,” Titans coach Mike Vrabel said, when asked if trading Brown was in the best interest of the team. “A.J. had a good game. We can’t give up big plays on defense. We tried to make them earn it coming into the game, and clearly we weren’t able to.”
Brown grew animated late in the third quarter when Tennessee defensive back Andrew Adams tackled him by his lower right leg and appeared to continue to twist it even after Brown was on the ground.
“He kind of just rolled, kind of twisted my ankle. There’s no need for those types of plays. Competing, doing whatever between the whistle, I’m all for it. If you get me, you got it. But dirty stuff after the play, I’m not going for that,” Brown said. “I’m a man first. We play this game. We’re playing football. That sequence aside, Brown expressed mostly love towards his former team and teammates, even if he was out to prove something to them.
“I think the whole world knew what it meant to him based off of who he is, how he is, and how he responds to certain things,” said Hurts, who threw three touchdowns and ran for another against the Titans. “I’m happy that he put on a show. He’s a special player and a good friend. He’s a real special player. I know that we make a big deal about it, but hopefully we can move on from it now. He did what he did, and onto the next.”
