Elon Musk is a genius.

No doubt here.

His name is a synonym of success and knowledge.

He is an expert in multiple fields, from rocket science, engineering, to artificial intelligence to solar power.

Elon Musk is a bit of a Unicorn, but his abilities aren’t unique.

How is he doing it?
Elon Musk has two rules, when it comes to learning, and these rules can be implemented by anyone at any time.

You can apply these rules and become anyone you want.

You can become a rocket scientist or a surgeon. If you want, of course.

It’s all about the right learning process.

Rule #1 — Make sure you are building a Tree of Knowledge
In a Reddit conversation, Musk discussed his approach to learning as such:

“It is important to view knowledge as sort of a semantic tree — make sure you understand the fundamental principles, i.e. the trunk and big branches, before you get into the leaves/details or there is nothing for them to hang onto.”

Musk is very skilled in understanding fundamental principles and mental models that are at the core of each of the sectors his entrepreneurial ventures sit in.

He starts at the trunk of the tree, making sure he understands all the fundamentals before moving to details, aka branches and the leaves.

Many of us do the opposite. We load up on minor facts while never fully comprehending how and why they connect back to the trunk. As a result, our brains are overcrowded with unimportant information.

It is not learning, it is cramming.

If you want to learn anything faster, you need to start with the fundamentals. Understand the core concepts first, before moving into more details.

Rule #2 — You can’t remember what you can’t connect
This is how Elon Musk was able to completely transform entire industries in a short period of time. He started with solid roots and trunks and then as he began to grow his knowledge upward, he began connecting branches and leaves together with other branches and leaves from other trees.

From an early age, Musk would read two books per day in various disciplines. He didn’t focus on just one field, like many of us do. He learned across multiple fields, and it gave him significant advantages. It allowed him to stand out and apply his vast knowledge to build several billion-dollar companies.

He built fundamental knowledge and expertise in many fields and started connecting and combining it together. This led to World-class results.

Most of us never learn the fundamentals and keep collecting bits of information here and there. We never fully understand the information we learn, and it makes it hard to relate it to our life.

In order to increase your chances of success, learn the fundamentals of the chosen fields first. Only then start expanding your knowledge.

Learn across multiple fields and work tirelessly on making connections.

This approach helped Elon Musk to enter an industry that has been established for over a century and completely transform the way it competes.
