Head to the Camargue for the majestic spectacle of common cranes

Written by on February 3, 2023

It is a moment out of time which it is possible to attend provided you get up before the sun: the awakening of the common crane. Thousands of these migratory birds are currently stopping over in the Camargue.
Day breaks over the Camargue marshes. A small group of observers woke up in the middle of the night, to be there in time. Every morning, thousands of common cranes take to the skies. These great travelers have been stopping here for only a few years. “There are two main migration routes for cranes. There have been changes in these routes, which have meant that they pass more through the Camargue”, explains Marie Pfister, naturalist guide at the Marais du Vigueirat.

“It is the living that surrounds us”
David Gryzb, director of the Vigueirat marsh, may know the place like the back of his hand, but he is still moved by the show. “It’s magnificent, it’s the living that surrounds us. (…) We never take enough time to observe it”, he confides. In the distance, the emerging mountains are tinged with pink, and the cries of birds become deafening for long minutes. The cranes go in search of food and return to their shelters in the evening, in the Camargue marshes.

Head to the Camargue for the majestic spectacle of common cranes, which spend the winter in the marshes. Guides offer to meet them at sunrise, when they spread their wings to get moving.

Cranes looking for food

They link football to ecology. The Clean my Calanques association offers Marseille supporters the opportunity to clean around the Vélodrome before each match. Brut followed them one evening.
“We ask people to pick up trash on the ground, precisely because we are proud of OM, but it’s too dirty.” The Marseille ecological association Clean my Calanques is now attacking the Vélodrome. Before each Olympique de Marseille match, volunteers offer supporters to pick up litter around the stadium. A good way, according to Éric, co-founder of the association, to show his pride for his city.

“It is not at all illogical that we are here”
“In fact, ecology should affect everyone: sport, football, art, culture, everyone. It’s a great vector because once you dare, once you put yourself in the middle, you do it, but look! Have you seen the actions? All the people who picked up, who already knew the thing, who knew the association, the movement… Well, little by little, it’s going to start. Exactly, you have to be the beginnings, you see: it wasn’t done in football, well we’re going to do it in football. And I’m proud that it’s in Marseille”, explains Éric.

The main objective of his association is to clean the creeks and preserve them from pollution. “But it starts here, the creeks,” says the co-founder. “It means that all the waste that is there, with a gust of wind or with the rain, it ends up in the creeks and in the sea. So it is not at all illogical that we are there, it’s even normal and so much the better, because it starts here, we have less waste to pick up later.”

Once the collection is finished, the association takes stock: “Seven to eight bags filled, so very heavy. There, what we are going to do is that we are going to move, we are going to sort and after, we are going to the stadium, we are going to enjoy ourselves, that’s it.
