HBO Max gains a lot of new subscribers
The Netherlands will have many new streaming services in 2022. But how successful are these services? In any case, HBO Mas seems to be catching on well.
From the quarterly earnings of Warner Bros. Discovery shows that HBO Max and other services of the company are growing nicely. HBO Max, HBO and Discovery+ together account for about 94.9 subscribers. That is an increase of 2.8 million, which is larger than, for example, Netflix, which “only” gained 2.41 million subscribers in the past quarter.

Most of these subscribers are probably for HBO and HBO Max. Although Warner Bros. Discovery did not distinguish between the three subscription services this time, according to previous quarterly figures that HBO and HBO Max had many times more subscribers than Discovery+. In this quarter, for example, the success of House of the Dragon will have contributed significantly.

Despite the growing number of subscribers, Warner Bros. Discovery still loses, although it is less this quarter. Debts have also decreased, although they still stand at a hefty $50.4 billion. The company previously tried to cut costs by, for example, scrapping Batgirl and Dutch originals.
HBO Max will soon disappear again
Although HBO Max is just new in the Netherlands, the streaming service is also going away soon. HBO Max and Discovery+ are planned to become one streaming service next year. That would happen sometime during the summer, but CEO David Zaslav says preparations are running smoothly enough to do it now in the spring.
