Written by on May 29, 2023

Fast & Furious star and producer Vin Diesel confirms there are several spinoff projects in ongoing development that are set to continue the franchise’s narrative following the end of the original saga. The franchise began in 2001 as a unique action-crime thriller with a focus on street racing and has since turned itself into one of the most bankable media franchises. The 10th film from the original saga, Fast X, was recently released to a solid worldwide box office opening of about $320 million, proving the Fast & Furious franchise’s continued financial viability.

Speaking to Variety at the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project Block Party, Diesel revealed that he has been working on several different Fast & Furious spinoffs. Some have been in development for over 5 years. Check out Diesel’s full quote below:

I started developing the female spinoff…in 2017 with other spinoffs, and the sooner I deliver the finale, the sooner I can launch all the spinoffs.

Which Fast & Furious Characters Could Be Getting Spinoffs?

There are a seemingly endless possibilities for Fast & Furious spinoffs, such as another Tokyo Drift-style entry centered on Han Lue (Sung Kang) or a prequel following Jakob Toretto (John Cena) during his time working for Mr. Nobody. The franchise has already had success with the Hobbs & Shaw spinoff, which finished with the fifth-highest domestic gross in the entire franchise. With Dwayne Johnson’s surprise return in Fast X and Jason Statham’s continued success as an action star, there could be another Hobbs & Shaw film in the offing.

The most tangible option right now is the female-led film that already has Nicole Perlman, Lindsey Beer, and Geneva Robertson-Dworet signed on to write the script. While Michelle Rodriguez has expressed a hesitance towards any spinoffs, the introduction of Queenie’s (Helen Mirren) female militia in Fast X creates a lot of possibilities. There is also the intriguing list of female characters such as Ramsey (Nathalie Emmanuel) and Tess (Brie Larson) that the writers can play with. If Cipher (Charlize Theron) survives the main saga, a redemption arc such as the one Deckard Shaw received could be interesting as well.

Though Diesel is already working on several new spinoffs, those will likely have to take a backseat until the original saga is completed, which might take longer than expected. While Fast X was originally going to be the first of a two-part finale, Diesel hinted Fast & Furious 12 could be on the way, stretching the original two-part finale into three parts. With two more mainline films seemingly now on the schedule and multiple spinoffs in the works, it looks like audiences will have more than enough to quench their thirst for more classic Fast & Furious hijinks in the near future.
