Tom Holland Spills Secrets Of Marvel & Sony’s Spider-Man 4 Planning Meetings
Written by on June 15, 2023
Keeping up with tradition, Tom Holland spills secrets of Marvel Studios and Sony’s Spider-Man 4 planning meetings. Holland comes off of one of the most successful superhero movies in history, as Spider-Man: No Way Home brought together his Marvel Cinematic Universe hero with Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s versions of Spider-Man for a global box office of $1.916 billion. Based on the movie’s record-breaking numbers, it was always a question of time until Holland returned for another solo film, and a new Spider-Man 4 update is always welcome.
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Holland shared some insight into the Spider-Man 4 meetings that had been happening between Marvel and Sony before the Writers Guild of America strike stopped work on the movie. According to Holland, present in the Spider-Man 4 development meetings alongside him were Spider-Man franchise producer Amy Pascal, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, and producer Rachel O’Connor, with other Marvel executives being present occasionally. Holland said he is “really happy with where we’re at” with Spider-Man 4‘s story, but he is “also a little apprehensive about it” due to the MCU Spider-Man movies having already been so successful. Check out the full quote below:
It was myself, Amy, [Marvel Studios president] Kevin Feige, [executive producer] Rachel [O’Connor], sometimes other executives from Marvel will sit in. It’s a collaborative process. The first few meetings were about, ‘Why would we do this again?’ And I think we found the reason why. I’m really, really happy with where we’re at in terms of the creative. But I’m also a little apprehensive about it. There’s a bit of a stigma about the fourth one in all franchises. I feel like we hit a home run with our first franchise and there’s a part of me that wants to walk away with my head held high and pass the baton to the next lucky kid that gets to bring this character to life.
When Spider-Man 4 Could Release In The MCU Phase 5 or 6
While the WGA strike might delay the start of filming on Spider-Man 4, Holland’s fourth solo movie in the role — a first for a Spider-Man actor — should arrive relatively soon, althought no exactly in the timeframe the MCU is used to. The turnaround time for Holland’s Spider-Man movies has been incredibly fast, with the actor appearing in a solo film every two years from 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming, going to 2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home before completing the trilogy with 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Spider-Man 4 will escape that MCU trend for the hero, with it being impossible for the film to debut this year, as so many details from the production have not even been finalized for the movie to start shooting. Holland is also reportedly on month eight of his one-year acting break, as the actor recently revealed. Based on the MCU star’s timeframe to return to acting, as well as the ongoing WGA strike impeding work on Spider-Man 4, a mid-2024 filming start seems like the earliest possible for the hero.
If Spider-Man 4 goes in front of cameras in mid-2024, then the movie would likely be released in theaters one year after that, as has been the filming-to-release turnaround time of Holland’s Spider-Man movies. Given the importance of the character, Holland’s Spider-Man 4 could be Marvel Phase 6’s second major Summer 2025 release after that May’s debut of Fantastic Four. Spider-Man 4 releasing in Winter 2025, following Spider-Man: No Way Home‘s proven strategy, is also a possibility.
