Tom Holland Casts Doubt on Spider-Man 4: ‘Who Knows?’

Written by on June 13, 2023

Tom Holland just suggested that Spider-Man 4 isn’t guaranteed to make it to the big screen.

Holland, who has portrayed the Marvel Cinematic Universe incarnation of Spider-Man since 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming, indicated there’s a chance a fourth installment may not happen in an interview with Inverse. “Whether or not it’ll come to fruition, who knows?” he said. “But right now it’s looking pretty good, and we’ll just have to wait and see.” At the same time, Holland also described himself as “excited” for Spider-Man 4 and hinted that pre-production continues to move forward.

That said, Holland also recently revealed that Spider-Man 4 is one of several Hollywood projects affected by the current Writers Guild of America strike. The English actor confirmed that while he’s already had “multiple conversations” with Marvel Studios about reprising the role of Peter Parker and his wall-crawling alter-ego, further meetings have been postponed “in solidarity with the writers.” Holland also made it clear that Spider-Man 4 is still in the “very, very early stages” of development, which means fans presumably shouldn’t expect the film to swing into theaters any time soon.

However, just because Spider-Man 4 doesn’t yet have a finished screenplay, that doesn’t mean Marvel Studios and Sony haven’t agreed on where to take Spider-Man’s story next. On the contrary, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige announced in February 2023 that the film’s overarching narrative is already set in stone. “All I will say is that we have the story. We have big ideas for that, and our writers are just putting pen to paper now,” he said. Feige declined to elaborate any further, and Spider-Man 4 plot and character details still remain thin on the ground as of this writing.

This includes the identity of the movie’s villain or villains, although at least once MCU veteran has made it clear he’s willing to fill that particular void. Vincent D’Onofrio, who plays the MCU version of Wilson Fisk/Kingpin, recently expressed interest in starring in Spider-Man 4, noting the enthusiasm for a Spider-Man/Kingpin confrontation among the MCU’s fanbase. “It’s very clear to [Marvel Studios] that I want to keep playing this part,” D’Onofrio said. “I’m just beginning to have fun with it and I still think that there’s so much more to do with this character, so I’m just hoping that I do get a call.”

Spider-Man 4 does not yet have a release date.
