Tim Allen Looks Back On Lightyear Recasting Controversy 1 Year Later With Toy Story 5 Confirmed

Written by on May 28, 2023

Tim Allen explains his confusion with Lightyear while still praising its star, Chris Evans. Allen was the voice of Buzz Lightyear in the original Toy Story films, playing the toy astronaut for all four movies. As the Toy Story universe expanded with 2022’s Lightyear, so too did the voice cast expand. Instead of Allen portraying Buzz again, Evans brought an alternate version of the character to life.

Speaking with The Daily Mail, Allen expresses his confusion surrounding the film Lightyear as a whole. While Allen acknowledges that “Chris [Evans] did a great job doing an ancillary part,” the actor claims that the film was “real confusing to” him and the rest of the original Toy Story crew. Check out the full quote from Allen below:

They were two completely different movies. And Chris did a great job doing an ancillary part. It was very confusing to all of us on the Toy Story movie side, which was real? I’m a script guy, so if Buzz is real, then Chris’s version of it was, as an actor doing it, real confusing to me.

Tim Allen Is Right To Be Confused About Lightyear

This is not the first time that Allen has taken a swing at Lightyear. Shortly after the film came out, Allen came forward to criticize Lightyear, saying that “there is no Buzz without Woody.” In short, Allen was claiming that Lightyear was entirely separate from the Toy Story universe that he knew. His original sentiment is confirmed by his most recent interview quote, wherein he mentions that Toy Story and Lightyear were two completely different movies.”

In both cases, Allen is completely justified in his qualms with Lightyear. Not only does the title itself denote that Toy Story is full of toys, but critical aspects of the first film’s narratives relate to Buzz and his companions being plastic playthings. In Toy Story 3, the central drama resides in the fact that Andy is going off to college and no longer needs his old toys. Buzz as a character himself also goes through a huge crisis of conscience when he, in 1995’s Toy Story, realizes that he is in fact a toy who has never visited galaxies to infinity and beyond.

To give Buzz a real astronaut backstory, then, feels like a complete abandonment of the original Toy Story premise, thus making Allen’s confusion understandable. It is no wonder that Lightyear flopped at the box office during its theatrical run. Hopefully, Toy Story 5, which Allen is expected to return in, will go back to the original canon enough to rid itself of the franchise’s mistake with Lightyear.
