“There’s Things That Are Completely False”

A recent report claimed that the extensive search to find the leads of Superman: Legacy may finally be coming to an end, with the first round of in-person screen tests for Clark Kent/Superman and Lois Lane expected to take place on Father’s Day weekend or the Monday or Tuesday after.

According to Deadline, Nicholas Hoult, David Corenswet and Tom Brittney are in contention for Superman, while either Emma Mackey, Rachel Brosnahan or Phoebe Dynevor will end up playing Lois.

During an appearance on Michael Rosenbaum’s Inside of You podcast, writer/director James Gunn was asked for an update, and while it sounds like some of the above names are indeed in the running, the filmmaker made it clear that there is also some inaccurate information doing the rounds.

“There’s things in there that are completely false, but I can’t go out there and say, ‘Oh this isn’t true, and this isn’t true’ without going through everything,” he explained. “And by the way, it’s not the audience’s — at this point, I don’t think it’s the business of anyone who is screen-testing for a role. That is a very private thing. “Journalists have to do what they have to do. That’s their job. They’re trying to get hits.”

Gunn did confirm that they are “narrowing down” the contenders, but are “not done yet.”

“They find out some things from agencies, but here’s the problem — is that they find out some things from agencies that might be true,” he continued. “They find out other things from agencies, which are agencies pushing their clients and trying to pump it up, like ‘I think my client is testing! There’s a lot of nonsense that comes out of it and that’s difficult because there’s people out there that are supposedly testing that aren’t, and that must be difficult for them as people.”

“And there’s other people that might be testing… and I think it’s a private thing between me and them.”

It must be frustrating for Gunn, but as a fan himself, we’re sure he understands why there’s always going to be so much interest in such a massive casting announcement.

Superman: Legacy is set to hit theaters in 2025.
