The Super Mario Bros. Movie Passes US$1.3 Billion at Global Box Office

After passing Frozen over the weekend, The Super Mario Bros. Movie continues its mission to collect all the power stars, or in this case, box office records, by being the second animated film ever to pass US$1.3 billion at the global box office (third if you count 2019’s The Lion King, but Disney doesn’t so neither do most box office trackers).
In Japan, the plumber’s home country, the Nintendo/Illumination-produced flick has moved up three spots to become the 37th highest-grossing film in Japan of all time.
As of June 4, in Japan, The Super Mario Bros. Movie has collected 10.96 billion yen (US$79.88 million) in box office receipts on the back of 7.73 million tickets sold. According to The Numbers, the film has made US$1.3 billion around the world. Only Frozen II at US$1.45 billion stands between the Italian plumber and first place on the worldwide animated charts (and that’s if a certain multiversal spider doesn’t take the crown).
