The Batman Part II Delays Filming By Nearly Six Months
Written by on June 2, 2023
The Batman Part II appears to be the latest major project to hit a major setback following the Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike gripping Hollywood, as the highly-anticipated superhero feature suffers a significant filming delay.
According to the Midgard Times, the sequel to 2022’s The Batman will likely begin principal photography in March of next year in London after initially being slated to start this November. While the report didn’t definitively state that the WGA strike is the cause of the delay, all writing activities for The Batman Part II have been paused while the film’s scribes, Matt Reeves and Mattson Tomlin, have been behind the picket line demanding fair wages and policies for all writers. However, the postponement of filming isn’t expected to jeopardize The Batman Part II‘s scheduled October 2025 release window.
The Batman Part II and Its Max Spinoff
News of The Batman Part II’s filming delay comes a few weeks after The Penguin, the Colin Farrell-led spinoff series set to premiere on HBO’s Max streaming service in 2024, halted production due to the WGA strike. Filming for the eight-episode miniseries, which is a direct follow-up to The Batman, stopped on May 16 in New York after local guilds and teamsters refused to cross the picket line. As a result, The Penguin‘s production reportedly could finish a month or two later than its original wrap date this August. Farrell is expected to reprise his role as Oswald Cobblepot/The Penguin in The Batman Part II.
The WGA strike began on May 2 after contract talks broke down between the writers and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. Countless shows and movies have experienced production disruptions due to the strike, including Star Wars: The Mandalorian, Daredevil: Born Again, Andor and Thunderbolts. The last writers strike in Hollywood lasted for 100 days between November 2007 to February 2008, while 1988’s 153-day strike remains the longest time the WGA stood behind the picket line. Industry insiders have claimed the ongoing strike could last deep into the summer.
Matt Reeves’ Hugely Successful Non-DCU Film
The Batman Part II is separate from the DCU, including the movie slate introduced by DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn this past January which features, among others, The Brave and the Bold. The movie will see Robert Pattinson return as Bruce Wayne/Batman, coming off a celebrated performance as Gotham City’s chief protector in the 2022 original. The Batman proved a critical and commercial success upon release, with the rebooted effort earning $771 million at the global box office on a budget of up to $200 million. The movie also starred Zoë Kravitz, Barry Keoghan, Andy Serkis and Jeffrey Wright.
Like the original, Reeves will direct The Batman Part II, with Warner Bros. Pictures producing and distributing the film. Meanwhile, a recent version of the screenplay for The Batman Part II reportedly featured noted supervillain Clayface, claiming the creature will have a major part to play in the upcoming sequel.
The Batman Part II is scheduled to hit theaters across North America on Oct. 3, 2025.
