With Memorial Day behind us, summer is on its way, and this summer is going to be absolutely loaded with new horror movies. We’re calling it the Summer of Screams for a reason!

But first, this week is all about Stephen King and Subspecies

Here’s all the new horror releasing May 30  – June 4, 2023!

From Bayview Entertainment, this week’s new releases kick off with Addison Heath and Jasmine Jakupi’sMy Cherry Pie, an indie slasher that’s now available on VOD outlets.

The film is said to be a “gory slice of retro horror.”

In My Cherry Pie, “On the run, three criminals find themselves holed up at a notorious old hospital that happens to be the hunting ground of a masked killer.”

Glenn Maynard, Trudi Ranik, and Sotiris Tzelios star.

After a successful festival run, Sylvia Caminer‘s horror movie Follow Her is making its way to limited theaters and VOD platforms on Friday, June 2, from Quiver.

“Jess (Dani Barker) has finally found her hook: secretly filming creepy interactions she encounters via online job listings, and using the kinks of others to fuel her streaming success. For her next episode, she’s been hired by Tom (Luke Cook) to write the ending of a screenplay in a remote, lavish cabin. Once there, the alluring self-proclaimed screenwriter hands her a script in which the two of them are the main characters. This client isn’t what he seems, and even though the money’s great… the real payment here could cost her life.

Follow Her is a psycho-sexual thriller that questions the ethical boundaries of social media.”

Michelle Swope wrote in her 4-star Fantaspoa review for Bloody Disgusting earlier this year, “The fact that Follow Her succeeds at being fun, meta, and thought-provoking, while also being a low budget, female-led project, makes this an exceptional movie.”

Full Moon’s Subspecies franchise returns with brand new fifth installment Subspecies V: Bloodrise, a glossy, high-quality prequel with a worldwide co-streaming premiere set for June 2 exclusively on SCREAMBOX and Full Moon Features!

The movie – which tells the origin story of the immortal bloodsucker Radu – will be streaming on both services (SCREAMBOX and Full Moon Features) alongside all four previous Full Moon classics, including 1991’s SubspeciesBloodstone: Subspecies II (1993), Bloodlust: Subspecies III (1994), and Subspecies 4: Bloodstorm (1998).

Nat Brehmer raves in his review of the new movie, “This isn’t simply a great Subspecies movie for modern day Full Moon, it’s a great Subspecies movie.” Nat continues, “All I asked of Subspecies V was to rekindle at least some of that feeling I had, watching these movies for the very first time. It does that, and then some. Subspecies V isn’t just a worthy entry in the series, it is absolutely in the running for best Subspecies movie, full stop.”

Subspecies V: Bloodrise follows the descent of Radu (once more played by series regular Anders Hove) from a noble warrior of the Church to a depraved, blood-hungry creature of the night. Stolen by crusaders on the night of his birth from his demon mother and vampire father, Radu grows up with no knowledge of his monstrous bloodline. Trained and exploited by a brotherhood of mystic monks to slay all enemies of the church, fate brings him back one night to his father’s castle, armed with the monster-slaying Sword of Laertes, to destroy the vampire Vladislas and reclaim a holy relic, the Bloodstone.

Filmed in Serbia, in and around historical castles and ruins, and co-starring original series star Denice Duff in a surprising role, this sensual, violent, and operatic exploration of evil marks a stunning return for one of the screen’s most beloved monsters.

From the mind of Stephen King20th Century Studios and 21 Laps’ The Boogeyman will be unleashed in theaters on Friday, June 2, and in select theaters beginning Thursday night.

In the film, “High school student Sadie Harper and her younger sister Sawyer are reeling from the recent death of their mother and aren’t getting much support from their father, Will, a therapist who is dealing with his own pain.

“When a desperate patient unexpectedly shows up at their home, he leaves behind a terrifying supernatural entity that preys on families and feeds on the suffering of its victims.”

“’The Boogeyman’ is a classic horror movie in the mold of ‘Poltergeist’ that has scares and heart in equal measure,” says director Rob Savage. “I vividly remember the terror I felt reading King’s short story as a kid, and it’s this feeling of childhood fear that I wanted to inspire in cinema audiences around the world. This film was made in collaboration with an incredibly talented team of creatives, and is anchored by wonderful, soulful performances from our incredible cast – I’m in awe of them, truly. We’re incredibly proud of this movie.”

Sophie Thatcher (“Yellowjackets”) and Chris Messina (Birds of Prey) star alongside David Dastmalchian (DuneThe Suicide Squad), Marin Ireland (Y: The Last Man, The Umbrella Academy), Vivien Lyra Blair (Bird BoxMr. Corman) and Madison Hu (Voyagers).

Scott Beck & Bryan Woods (A Quiet Place) and Akela Cooper (Malignant) wrote the original drafts of the script, with Mark Heyman (Black Swan) being brought on board as well.

The original story was first published in 1973, before finding a home in Stephen King’s Night Shift collection in 1978. This will be the first time the tale has been adapted as a feature.
