Ryan Reynolds Unable To Improvise In ‘Deadpool 3’ Due To WGA Strike

Filming is currently underway for the highly-anticipated Deadpool 3, which will officially bring theMerc with a Mouth into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, the film’s restrictions due to the writer’s strike have many fans worried about the fate of the Ryan Reynolds film.

The Writer’s Guild of America (WGA) strike has shut down the production of dozens of projects across Hollywood, including Marvel’s Blade and Thunderbolts due to the studio being unable to use its writers to finish or tweak scripts. Other projects have opted to continue production without writers on set, including Deadpool 3, with the catch being that no member of the WGA working on the film is able to perform the duties of a writer.

Deadpool 3 continuing production during the strike under these conditions has worried some fans given Ryan Reynolds is a member of the WGA and a credited writer on the project, and thus is unable to improvise as his character under the rules of the strike. While many point out that Reynolds has a loophole as a producer, allowing him to make “casual minor adjustments in dialogue or narration made prior to or during the period of principal photography,” the WGA has encouraged members to refrain from any writer-like practices no matter their role in a project.

The situation certainly isn’t as dour as it seems. Ryan Reynolds still had a hand in the script for Deadpool 3, so much of his voice is still likely to be heard in the film despite being unable to improvise. However, even in a world where Deadpool 3 didn’t need a single line of improvisation, the restriction of such a useful tool is definitely worthy of criticism against the film continuing production during the WGA strike.

The Writer’s Guild of America is entering its fourth week of striking for more secure working conditions and pay comparable to agreements made before streaming existed. Fans worried about Ryan Reynolds’ improvisation in Deadpool 3 shows the importance of writers even after the script is complete. One can only hope the studios come back to the table sooner rather than later to end the WGA strike.

Shawn Levy is directing Deadpool 3 after working with Ryan Reynolds on Free Guy and The Adam Project. The upcoming Marvel Studios project also marks a reunion between Levy and Hugh Jackman as the two worked together on Real Steel.

Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick are developing the Deadpool 3 script after penning the first two installments in the series. The Molyneux sisters worked on a previous draft of the project.
