Rise Of The Beasts Director In Talks For Transformers 8 After Major Twist Ending

Warning: SPOILERS lie ahead for Transformers: Rise of the Beasts!

After keeping the franchise on a relative win streak, director Steven Caple Jr. confirms he is in talks to direct Transformers 8. The Creed II director made his first leap into blockbuster filmmaking with Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, a continuation of the prequel/soft reboot storyline set up by the critically acclaimed Bumblebee. The new movie finds a disillusioned Optimus Prime gathering the Autobots and teaming up with the long-forgotten Maximals for a new fight against the Terrorcons to prevent the arrival of the planet-consuming Unicron.

During an appearance on Deadline‘s Crew Call Podcast, Steven Caple Jr. was asked about the possibility of his franchise return after helming Transformers: Rise of the Beasts. Though unable to confirm he was “signed on” for the next sequel, the director did reveal that he was in talks to direct the planned Transformers 8, with Paramount having seemingly been keen to bring him back for more. See what Caple Jr. shared below:

I am not officially signed on for the next movie. We’re in the works now, but I’m not officially signed on. I’m in talks. I set up a lot of stuff in this film, and with the studio, myself, and the producers, every time we talk about the future, there’s a lot of ‘we’, the word ‘we’. It’s kind of naturally fell that way. But everything that was planted here was for the future, so yeah. Yeah, we’re in talks.

How Transformers: Rise of the Beasts Set Up Multiple Sequels

Even before its release, Paramount had indicated that Transformers: Rise of the Beasts would be the first of “three new installments“, though also announced the CG-animated prequel movie Transformers One and a new Nickelodeon show at the same time, making it unclear if the other two mentioned would be live-action follow-ups. Considering the latest sequel was narrowly able to beat out Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse in its opening box office, it seems likely Paramount will be keen on capturing the same success on the big screen.

In addition to setting up the return of Pete Davidson’s Mirage following his near-death in the movie’s climax, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts left audiences shocked with it twist ending finding Anthony Ramos’ Noah being recruited to join G.I. Joe. Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura has frequently shared his hopes to make a Transformers and G.I. Joe crossover happen, though Paramount was reportedly hesitant. With the Joes now officially a part of the Transformers universe, it will be interesting to see if the next movie in either franchise is this crossover.

One of the biggest questions facing the sci-fi franchise’s future is whether Transformers 8 will be another prequel to the Michael Bay movies, or act as a continuation of them. Given Rise of the Beasts is set just over a decade before the first Transformers, there’s not much room left before coming back to the Shia LaBeouf-led movie. Though with Unicron also now established as a major threat of the series, and Caple Jr. teasing Thanos-level plans for him, it’s clear the director knows where he’s going next with the franchise.
