Random: Guillermo del Toro Praises Mario Movie For Moving Animation In Right Direction

Del Toro continued by saying “Animation to me is the purest form of art, and it’s been kidnapped by a bunch of hoodlums”, dismaying what he sees as the “teenage rom-com” codification of the medium. He urgently wants to see “real life in animation”. It’s a pretty expressive, profanity-strewn speech full of passion for the medium, and well worth reading.

Guillermo del Toro is well-known to be a fan of video games, so his love of the Mario Movie shouldn’t be very surprising. Ico and Shadow of the Colossus are two titles he has high praise for, and a few of his favourite titles are Asteroids and Galaga. But perhaps, most famously, del Toro collaborated with Hideo Kojima on P.T., which was the playable demo designed to promote the now-cancelled Silent Hills. Del Toro later worked with Kojima again, providing his likeness for the character Deadman in Death Stranding.
