Elemental is fighting back against its Rotten Tomatoes score, which has jumped 23 percent on the website. Pixar’s latest film is a romantic comedy in a world where everyone is made of a different element, showcasing the love story between the fire element Ember (Leah Lewis) and the water element Wade (Mamoudou Athie). The film debuted on Rotten Tomatoes with a score of 57 percent based on seven critic reviews.
Now, Rotten Tomatoes lists Elemental as having a score of 80 percent on the website based on 44 critic reviews, a 23 percent jump for the film. Despite the initial lukewarm reception, it seems Pixar’s Elemental has managed to provide a positive experience for many critics. Check out a comparison of the two scores from Daniel Richtman below:
What Elemental’s Rotten Tomatoes Change Means For The Movie
First reviews for Elemental were mixed when the film premiered at Cannes Film Festival in May 2023. While some praised the film for its interesting visuals, others criticized it for not exploring its themes of different elements living together as much as it could have. However, with a recent jump in positive reactions to Pixar’s latest outing, Elemental seems like it could be a critical success as more reviews come in.
The new reviews for Elemental also underscore anticipation for the film, which could help Pixar after Lightyear bombed at the box office in 2022. However, Elemental will release on the same day as The Flash, while Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny will be out two weeks into its theatrical run. Because of these blockbuster films, it’s unclear how well Elemental will be able to compete with them.
Even if Elemental doesn’t make a lot of money at the box office, it could still find success on Disney+ after its theatrical run. It would not be the first for a Disney animated movie to earn streaming success, such as when box office failure Strange World became No. 1 on Disney+ the week it debuted on the platform. It’s too early to tell how Elemental will perform in theaters, but the uptick of positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes could signal a successful theatrical venture for Pixar’s newest release, despite stiff competition.
