Last December marked what would have been Stan “The Man” Lee’s 100th birthday, and Marvel Studios announced at the time that 2023 would see the release of Stan Lee, an Original documentary, on Disney+.
Now, a full trailer for that has been released along with the news it will premiere on June 16.
“His origin story. His legacy. In his own words,” reads a brief synopsis, while the footage itself strongly suggests that the effect will be achieved through the use of archival footage and audio. The comic book creator loved talking to his fans, so we’re sure he’d approve of this approach to recapping his extraordinary life.
What’s unclear is how much, if at all, this documentary will delve into the controversies surrounding how much the artists Lee worked with were credited for their contributions to the Marvel Universe. There are also the impossible-to-ignore accusations of elder abuse that surrounded those who cared for him during his final years.
As you might expect, Lee’s Marvel movie cameos promise to be a big part of this documentary, and it should be a lot of fun to revisit those. Following his death in 2018, the last time we saw the legendary creator on screen was in Avengers: Endgame, with his final appearance in the MCU coming during Captain America and Iron Man’s trip back in time together.
The opening credits of Captain Marvel paid tribute to the writer, while Spider-Man: Far From Home was the first and only Infinity Saga movie to not feature a cameo from him. One was never discussed as his health deteriorated after Avengers: Endgame, but Stan’s impact continues to be felt throughout the MCU as his characters continue to thrive on screen.
