James Gunn Reveals His Favorite ‘Underrated’ Superman Villains

Superman: Legacy writer-director James Gunn recently revealed some of his favorite ‘underrated’ Superman villains.
Responding to a fan on Twitter, Gunn noted that he has affection for “too many” underappreciated Man of Steel baddies to count. That said, the filmmaker (and DC Studios co-chair and co-CEO) added artwork of four of Superman’s adversaries — Parasite, Silver Banshee, Ultra-Humanite and Lady Blaze — to his tweet, potentially indicating that this quartet is especially close to his heart. In the comments, Gunn also expressed admiration for two of the Caped Crusader’s other foes, Metallo and Bizarro, although he added that he didn’t think either villain was underrated by the DC Comics fanbase.
Gunn’s tweet comes at a time when DC devotees continue to speculate about the identity of Superman: Legacy‘s main villain. The filmmaker and studio boss remains tight-lipped on the subject, however, at least two industry insiders allege that the film will pit the Man of Steel against Brainiac. If true, this would mark Brainiac’s big screen debut, although the legendary evildoer has previously appeared in a range of live-action and animated TV shows and direct-to-DVD features. It’s worth noting that Gunn is yet to confirm or deny Brainiac’s supposed inclusion in Superman: Legacy, which means this rumor should be taken with a grain of salt for now.
James Gunn Addresses Superman: Legacy Casting Rumors
The online rumor mill also contends that Gunn and the team at DC Studios are poised to begin screen testing for Superman: Legacy‘s biggest roles, Clark Kent/Superman and Lois Lane. Sources say that the frontrunners for the Superman role are Nicholas Hoult, David Corenswet and Tom Brittney, with Emma Mackey, Rachel Brosnahan and Phoebe Dynevor said to be the top contenders to play Lois. Gunn and fellow DC Studios co-chair and co-CEO Peter Safran will reportedly be present for the screen tests, which will apparently take place around Father’s Day weekend.
Gunn hasn’t publicly commented on the latest buzz surrounding Superman: Legacy‘s casting process — and fans shouldn’t necessarily expect him to, either. In a May 2023 tweet, Gunn made it clear that it’s his policy never to speak openly about auditions unless one or more of the actors involved do so first. Gunn also dismissed rumors that any of Superman: Legacy‘s major characters had been cast yet, revealing that only a single, less prominent role has been filled to date.
Superman: Legacy is slated to premiere on July 11, 2025.
