James Gunn confirms The Flash director Andy Muschietti will return for Batman movie

Written by on June 17, 2023

The Flash‘s Andy Muschietti will direct the upcoming Batman movie The Brave and the Bold.

Announced in DC Studios boss James Gunn’s plans at the beginning of the year, this is a new take on the Batman mythology that sits completely separate from Robert Pattinson’s existing version.

The Brave and the Bold sees Gotham’s protector discover a son he never knew he had – Damian Wayne, who later becomes Robin in the comics.

However, their relationship has its challenges, as Damian was raised by murderous assassins. Gunn has previously described the movie as “a very strange father-and-son story”.

“We saw The Flash even before taking the reins at DC Studios, and knew we were in the hands of not only a visionary director, but a massive DC fan,” said Gunn and Peter Safran in a statement (via Variety).

“It’s a magnificent film – funny, emotional, thrilling – and Andy’s affinity and passion for these characters and this world just resonates through every frame.

“So when it came time to find a director for The Brave and the Bold, there was really only one choice. Luckily, Andy said ‘yes’, Barbara [Muschietti] signed on to produce with us and were on our way.

“They’re an extraordinary team, and we couldn’t have better or more inspiring partners as we embark on this thrilling new adventure in the DCU.”

The Muschietti siblings have also a multi-year first-look deal with Warner Bros Pictures and Warner Bros Television Group/Max, with production on their IT prequel series Welcome to Derry already underway.

Meanwhile, speaking exclusively to Digital Spy this month, Andy was asked about potentially taking the reins on a future DC blockbuster.

“I kind of like making these kinds of movies,” he replied. “Having access to these kinds of resources, the superhero genre is a massive thing. You can do almost everything that you want in terms of resources.

“I wouldn’t mind doing another one.”

The Flash is out now in cinemas.
