James Gunn Confirms The First DC Universe Movie Character
Written by on June 14, 2023
Following uncertainty about whether or not Blue Beetle will be connected to the DC Universe, James Gunn sets the record straight about the young hero’s future. With DC Studios working on several movies and TV shows for the upcoming DC Universe, a new era is coming thanks to Gunn and his co-CEO, Peter Safran. The Flash movie will be one of the last DCEU projects from before Gunn and Safren stepped in, with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom coming out later this year. However, in between these projects comes Blue Beetle, a film whose franchise future has been unclear due to the rise of DC Studios.
It appears that the mystery has finally been solved as Gunn recently chatted about his future with DC Studios on Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum. During his guest spot on the popular podcast, the DC Studios boss confirmed that while his Superman: Legacy movie will be the first proper DC Studios film, the Blue Beetle character will officially be the first DC Universe character. While it was always known that Blue Beetle wouldn’t be tied to the DCEU, it was still uncertain whether or not it would be a DC Universe property or exist as an Elseworlds story.
The first DCU character for sure is Blue Beetle, and the first DCU movie is Superman [Legacy.]
How Blue Beetle Is Already Perfectly Setup For James Gunn’s DC Universe
Even though Blue Beetle was produced during the old DC Films era, the project has already gotten itself a perfect setup for Gunn’s DC Universe. In the first Blue Beetle movie trailer, the only superhero who gets name-dropped is Batman, but he is never shown through any visual representation. Had there been actual footage of Ben Affleck’s Batman, whether it be through scenes from past DCEU movies or pictures, Blue Beetle would have been in a more awkward spot.
Blue Beetle has also avoided referencing any major events from the previous DCEU films and instead focuses on being a bit more self-contained. That makes it easier for Xolo Maridueña’s character to return to the DC Universe because his film won’t touch upon any of the upcoming projects that DC Studios have in the works. With Gunn confirming that Jaime Reyes will exist in the same world as his DC characters, it sets the hero up for a lot of potential in future projects.
Time will tell where Blue Beetle may show up next after his solo film, but to know that he shares the same continuity as Gunn’s larger DC Universe is quite exciting. It wouldn’t be shocking if Jaime were to show up in some of the DC Universe shows that are in the works, particularly Booster Gold, who has ties to Ted Kord, another Blue Beetle who is hinted at in the upcoming film. Hopefully, once Blue Beetle has arrived in theaters, Gunn will elaborate more on what the DC Universe has in store for the character.
