Filmmaker James Cameron stated recently that Avatar: The Way of Water will easily turn a profit now and that he will need to begin work on future instalments in his expanding franchise.
According to Variety, Cameron stated on Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace?, “It looks like with the momentum that the film has now that we’ll easily pass our break even in the next few days, so it looks like I can’t wiggle out of this and I’m gonna have to do these other sequels… I know what I’m going to be doing the next six or seven years.”
The Next Avatar Films
The director then continued to clarify where the franchise in with its various projects, including Avatar 3, which is very near completion. Cameron explained, “We’ve already captured and photographed the whole film, so we’re in extended post-production to do all that CG magic. And then ‘Avatar 4’ and ‘5’ are both written. We even have some of ‘4’ in the can. We’ve begun a franchise at this point. We’ve begun a saga that can now play out over multiple films.”
Cameron has not divulged too many details about Avatar 3, though he recently provided hints concerning what audiences can expect to see from the Na’vi. Specifically, he revealed the upcoming film will introduce the “Ash people,” who will help showcase a different side of Pandora’s native people. “In the early films, there are very negative human examples and very positive Navi’s examples. In Avatar 3, we’ll do the reverse.”
