Is Ahsoka’s Sabine Wren Star Wars’ Next Mandalorian Jedi?

Written by on June 12, 2023

Sabine Wren is returning to the Star Wars universe on Ahsoka, and she’s got a new weapon of choice. A Mandalorian, artist and Rebel, Sabine first appeared on the animated series Star Wars Rebels, where she was seen fighting alongside Ahsoka Tano and the crew of the Ghost. Her live-action debut will see her reuniting with Ahsoka to find the missing Jedi Ezra Bridger, whose lightsaber she has been seen wielding in the latest trailer for Ahsoka.

While this isn’t the first time Sabine has been seen wielding a lightsaber — nor even the first time she has been seen using Ezra’s lightsaber specifically — it is the first time she has crossed blades with an apparent Force-wielder, in the form of new villain Shin Hati. Naturally, this has raised a few questions among fans, with some wondering whether Sabine is about to put her Mandalorian heritage to one side and start training as a Jedi.

Sabine Wren Trained Under Jedi on Star Wars Rebels

Wherever Sabine’s journey may be taking her on Ahsoka, there can be no doubt Jedi have played a significant role in her life. Not only did she travel with two Jedi — Kanan Jarrus and Ezra Bridger — on Star Wars Rebels, but when she came into possession of the Darksaber, Kanan and Ezra trained her in the art of lightsaber combat. While the goal of this training was to help Sabine use the Darksaber to unite and mobilize the Mandalorians against the Empire, wielding a lightsaber is a discipline steeped in Jedi philosophy, and Sabine had to overcome her Mandalorian tendency for aggression to master this skill.

Beyond this lightsaber training, Sabine’s time in the Rebellion alongside Kanan and Ezra obviously had an impact on her as well. By the Rebels series finale, “Family Reunion – and Farewell,” it was Sabine who helped Ezra put into action a plan that would see him sacrifice himself to beat Thrawn, possibly hinting she had mastered the Jedi philosophy of foregoing attachments for the greater good. Ahsoka will once again see Sabine teaming up with a Jedi, or former Jedi, in Ahsoka Tano. This might suggest she will be venturing further down the Jedi path under Ahsoka’s guidance.

Ahsoka Throws Sabine Wren Into a Jedi-Heavy Adventure

While the fight against a resurgent Grand Admiral Thrawn is looming over Ahsoka, the series appears to be heavily concerned with exploring lore surrounding the Jedi Order. New villains Baylan Skoll and Shin Hati seem to be Dark Jedi of some form, and the series’ first trailer shows Ahsoka exploring what looks like an ancient Jedi temple. While Sabine is putting back on her Mandalorian armor to join Ahsoka, she is sure to learn much from the former Jedi.

While Mandalorians and Jedi are historically enemies, there has been some overlap between their cultures. The Darksaber was forged by the first Mandalorian Jedi, Tarre Vizsla, and The Mandalorian has recently shown Grogu learning both Jedi and Mandalorian ideologies. Sabine may continue this trend. A shot from Ahsoka shown at Star Wars Celebration Anaheim in 2022 featured the hand of an unseen individual apparently trying to use the Force. Could this have been Sabine? Whether she proves to be Force-sensitive, there can be no doubt that Sabine has adopted much of the Jedi Order’s wisdom and will likely continue to be shaped by their teachings as she begins her quest for Ezra Bridger.
