Insidious 5’s new trailer brings back a fan-favourite character

Insidious: The Red Door, the fifth instalment in the horror franchise, wants you to know that it’s taking things back to its roots. Its newest trailer features the return of a familiar antagonist.
As we can see in the footage, the film returns to the Lambert family from the first two films, with Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne reprising their roles as Josh and Renai, respectively. Ty Simpkins (who has since appeared in Jurassic World and The Whale) is also back as their son Dalton, now grown-up.
While Dalton had no memory of what happened in those previous encounters, he’s started having horrific nightmares. Josh and Renai realise that they’ve got no choice but to tell their son the truth — especially as the supernatural terrors are wreaking havoc once again.

The new Insidious 5 trailer builds up to a scene in which Josh is attacked by a demon who’s crawling at him at high speed in an MRI machine.
Right at the end of the footage, we see the fan-favourite antagonist from the first film, the Lipstick-Face Demon, making a return.
The strikingly red creature has been making small cameos across the films since the first one — could this be a grand return as The Red Door‘s big bad, or are we just getting another brief glimpse?

Leigh Whannell, James Wan and Jason Blum are all still involved with the film, but Patrick Wilson has actually stepped up to direct this time around.
Writing in Empire recently, Wilson explained how his vision for Insidious will be different to what’s come before.
“I’ve seen this movie on the page for so long that I knew exactly what I wanted,” he wrote.
“This being a movie with Dalton and Josh dealing with trauma, balancing the light and dark in their life, it’s very heavy stuff and doesn’t lend itself to jump-scares.
“I didn’t want to emulate James [Wan], or be more like him. So there’s a tonal dread.”
Insidious: The Red Door is released in cinemas on July 7.
